Eder Meister, the new coach for London City Lionesses, yet to concede that goalless draw
with Liverpool followed by a 1-0 win at Sunderland in the FA Cup last week. They've got a home tie
coming up against Spurs in round five so they could still have a really successful season but
they've given the ball away here and the opportunity struck well by Aslani but it was always rising.
Yes it was but I don't blame her at all for taking the effort on goal. It's really good
hustling in the first instant. Lauren Hemp just running into a little bit of a coldy sack.
Brilliant to see Fernandes pressing that high up and she has got the quality to hit the target
from that area. Aslani just doesn't get over it. Here is Bunny Short, she's got support from
Miedema and there could be an overload down the right here. Kasperai, Keralin, Hasegawa
Keralin has got room for the cross and somehow Bunny Short fails to convert.
Wow and it's not very often you see that from that sort of range. Bunny Short, we know
they're going to create chances and we know Bunny Short more often than not is going to be the one
that benefits from them but this is the way they're going to break down London City. Those
little passes, bit of invention from Hasegawa and it's just a huck in hope across from Keralin
but Lete was absolutely stranded. Sangare misjudges it but luckily for London City so
does Bunny Short. Yamashita in towards Hasegawa and that's nicely done and here is Miedema
and Keralin could be in here. Brilliantly done. Keralin with the goal for Manchester City
and they could be heading nine points clear and that was a goal
which says so much about how they played this season. There's a lovely bit of play from Hasegawa
and Blinkelder-Brown and it's the first time we've seen the London City Lionesses' backline
that high in the game so far and Keralin sniffs it out. Bunny Short had come to feet and that's
what they do so well, this Manchester City team, is the interchange of the movements. Keralin started
on the right but she's so dangerous when she comes across and plays centrally as well. You just know
the form she's in. Four goals already this season, this one is only ending up in one place.
And Aslani can come forward on the counter-attack here, looking for the pace of Goodwin and Goodwin
could be in. Just has to check back, didn't really have the support or the angle to get the shot in.
Real warning signs for Manchester City, that's a couple of times now. A simple through ball and a
good run from Goodwin and they've got him behind Manchester City. Could she have taken the strike
on earlier, tried to find that far corner, Izzy Goodwin. There's a really good recovery from
Jade Rose in the first instance, just to delay and Hasegawa, always full of running to help a
defence out. Here is Shaw with an opportunity, good save by Leyte and she clings on. Did well,
there's plenty of power on that, plenty behind it from Bunny Short. Bit of skill again from Keralin
to find a teammate, a little bit of luck from Bunny Short. Pattinson, Manchester City pressing
all over the field and Pattinson under pressure there from Keralin and it's Manchester City who
get the free kick, taken quickly by Keralin and here is Miedema, hemmed to the left.
Shaw waiting at the far post as she and Keralin completely unmarked and Leyte's done well
initially but here is Keralin and there is Aslani. Well as a neutral I think that would have been
maybe a little bit of a controversial moment had they scored from that quick free kick. I wasn't
sure there was much at all in the challenge between Pattinson and Keralin. It's cut out this time
and quickly forward towards Goodwin and this is the opportunity for London City
and Goodwin are denied by a great save and Yamashita earning the luck as it came back
off the upright. Oh hugely lucky, she should go out and buy a lottery ticket Yamashita I think
because what a wonderful break from London City. They were patient and when Perez wins it back
you're thinking she's not got an awful lot on but what a run again from Goodwin. They're so high
Manchester City when they play this way. Jade Rose and Kanaka never getting back when she's at full
speed Izzy Goodwin and she does everything right. She works so hard to get on the end of it, she
opens up her body. It is a brilliant touch though from Yamashita and she's alert to the rebound as
well. One back by Blinkelder, short, now Hemp goes for the curler and it's gathered well by Leyte.
She's not the tallest Leyte and she wasn't far enough off the line for it to lob her but it was
a nice bit of invention from Hemp. All eyes were on the overlap from Kasperi but she chose to take
it on her left. Sangare, she goes down inside the area, no real appeals. Rodart and the crossing is
dangerous and Goodwin hits the bar. It's still loose for Kennedy and then Sangare on the turn
and Manchester City escape. Fernandes returns it and it's claimed by Yamashita and for the second
time in the first half London City denied by the woodwork. Wow they need more of this, all outfield
players involved in this move here. Sangare does well actually immediately up onto her feet. I
thought they could have appealed more for that, it was a clumsy bit of physicality from behind.
It's a good tease in delivery and she leaps higher than anybody under plenty of pressure from Kanak
and I think it's Sangare on the swivel just can't quite connect with the follow-up but
plenty of positive signs for London City to build upon if they can get in at half time.
Hasegawa, Hemp again and then Kasperi is bowled over by Pattinson and it will be a free kick.
That was a clumsy one on Kasperi, it's not just the original contact, I think it's
the follow-through she accidentally lands on her as well, it's a painful one.
Greenwood over the free kick here and it's deep towards Hemp, completely unmarked and it's flicked
on towards Kasperi and eventually scrambled behind. It's defended well, it was a very clever
set piece and Kasperi was nearly on the end of it. Yeah you're dead right Nigel, it's purposeful
isn't it and look at this for defensive action from Corrales. Here is Pattinson, she's worked
the one-two and now Goodwin just curving her run to stay on side and Aslani was looking to break to
the byline and in the end she may have also had a painful blow against the advertising hoardings.
I thought Aslani looked like she was going to win this race with Becker-Knack, I'm not sure she makes
too much contact there, the German centre-back. That's a good ball from Godfrey and here is Aslani.
Goodwin ahead of her, now Corrales needs a good cross, Aslani, oh high and wide, what an opportunity.
Oh it's wonderful football, it really is and they deserve to be back into this game from how they've
come out in this second half. It breaks for Aslani and she makes the right decision. I love this bit
of invention from Corrales, you're expecting the cross, she goes to the little reverse cutback to
her captain Aslani and there's nobody else you'd want taking on this opportunity. It does just take
a little bobble. Pattinson, now Rodart and the cross is driven and Sangare was challenging and
she nearly got there but Bunny Shaw did just enough. Oh Bunny Shaw loves being in the box but
she doesn't want to be in that box, deep into her own penalty area having to deal with this one. Look
at it, she's the furthest player back for Manchester City which tells you everything you need to know
Hasegawa in towards Shaw, she can turn onto the left foot but effort is rather slashed wide in
the end. Yeah and you know what, just watching Bunny Shaw, she'd been demanding the ball got
looped into her for about 15 phases before this eventually gets fed to her feet. It's good movement
she does well to carve out the space for the shot but it's a poor effort in the end by her standards.
Appeals for handball against Aslani but nothing given. Now Godfrey, Goodwin in the centre
but Godfrey though goes for goal and it's brilliant and the first goal in the women's
Super League under Ede Meister is an absolute cracker from Freya Godfrey. Brilliant finish,
20 years of age up against what many people have said are the imminent champions in Manchester
City and you can understand when you watch them here why it's a club full of ambition, full of
excitement. When Freya Godfrey picks it up you're just wondering who is she going to pick out when
she's in this position. There's claims for handball but Lisa Benn the referee is totally behind Aslani
so she does the right thing, she didn't see it so she can't call it. She slows herself down,
little bit of trickery and Yamashita no chance. And here is Medabar now, Shaw with the opportunity
and it's over the top. I think Medabar is instrumental isn't she, the way she brings
it down on the pivot. I'm not sure what Sangare is doing and she's trying to do a Freya Godfrey
here and just backing her power to find the inside of that net of Lete's. London City make
heavy weather of dealing with that and a corner kick's been conceded by Alain Lete. Can City
snatch the victory here? Goffey's delivery, it's guided away by Kennedy
and that's a good ball in towards hemp and is it scrambled over the line it's clear but there's
Shaw and Buddy Shaw has done it and that is what champions do. A look at the reaction,
I think they thought this would be a pretty straightforward three points for them today.
They watched their rivals Chelsea drop further away from them yesterday but it's the substitute
with a really teasing delivery as it comes to Hasegawa, you know she's going to do something
cute. It's a lovely ball into hemp's feet and as it comes out to Shaw she's not going to make a
mistake from there but it's the first bit of quality we've seen at all in the second half
of Manchester City. Yamashita clears downfield and that's it. Bonnie Shaw with the winning goal
for Manchester City and is this the weekend when Chelsea's generational grip on the women's
Super League has finally been loosened. Manchester City on nine points clear. It is finished,
London City Lionesses 1, Manchester City 2. I really think that we deserve something more
but we need to understand that a way to play and that experience needs to become a game changer
situation to understand and recognize ourselves in that kind of mentality. There is something in
this group that they never even though that it's not a beautiful game we still find ways to win,
keep on going, finding different spaces all the time so I'm very happy of course and also proud
of how this winning mentality really is in this group.
