Nguyễn Thị Sen is honored as the Founding Ancestor of Vietnam’s tailoring profession.
She lived during the reign of King Đinh Tiên Hoàng in the 10th century. Gifted with exceptional skill in sewing, embroidery, and textile making, she was invited to the royal court and later became one of the king’s consorts.
Nguyễn Thị Sen devoted herself to teaching tailoring and textile techniques to court ladies and local people, helping shape and preserve Vietnam’s traditional garment-making craft. Through her dedication and generosity in passing on knowledge, the tailoring profession flourished and was passed down through generations.
After her passing, she was deeply respected and honored by artisans across the country as the Tailoring Craft Ancestor of Vietnam.
Every year, on the 12th day of the twelfth lunar month, tailors and fashion artisans gather to commemorate her legacy, express gratitude, and remember the roots of their profession.
Incense Offering Ceremony
An incense offering ceremony is a traditional Vietnamese ritual held to show respect, gratitude, and remembrance toward ancestors, national heroes, founders of professions, or spiritual figures. During the ceremony, incense is lit and offered at an altar, often accompanied by flowers, food, and prayers.
The act of offering incense symbolizes a spiritual connection between the living and the departed, expressing sincerity, reverence, and a wish for blessings, peace, and harmony. Incense offering ceremonies are commonly held during festivals, memorial days, ancestral anniversaries, and important cultural or professional commemorations.
The people offering incense in the video are leading Vietnamese áo dài designers, most notably Đỗ Trịnh Hoài Nam.
