A Friday deadline to fund the federal government is drawing near. Last week, the House passed a $1.2 trillion spending package that would fund the departments of War, Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and the DHS.

This so-called “minibus” spending package seemed on track to pass the Senate until just a few days ago, but that changed in the wake of the shooting of Alex Pretti–a protester carrying a firearm in Minneapolis–by Customs and Border Protection agents.

Senate Republicans are now asking Democrats to clarify their expectations around funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to find a compromise.
