For nearly 700 years, until the new purpose-built Royal Courts of Justice opened in 1882, Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster, was the central location for the highest courts in England. But the crowded, inefficient use of medieval Hall, along with a massive increase in cases and need for modern, specialized courtrooms by the late 19th century, led to the construction of the dedicated Royal Courts of Justice. The building itself is the prime example of a unique High Victorian Gothic Revival style that masterfully combines 13th-century English and French Gothic forms with Italian elements.
