He's up a great point straight away here.
Well too. Starting to heat up. Colin mentioned at the start of the match speed around the court
is breathtaking at times. That's well done. It was an awkward short ball he had to deal with but he
played that short forehand beautifully. Pushed it into the gap. Was waiting for the volley.
It's the first to strike. Well well well. Maybe Tommy Paul's. Alcaraz's kryptonite.
Just clips the line. Chewed a bit of everything. Konky shots along the way. A couple of bunts.
Just anything really to get the ball back into play sometimes. Well is it just me or did Carlitos
think about the hot dog here through the legs and maybe just thought wait a minute this is a
great point. I need this one. Beautiful. Quite sure why. The breeze just helping that ball
bend back in onto that sideline.
Again Alcaraz. That's a nice change up. Maybe signs that Alcaraz is about to come to life.
Well Paul will be wishing he served volley again there because Alcaraz just
chipping the return into play and once he gets into the point well that's where he comes to life.
Unbelievable running forehand. He's so dangerous out that corner.
An exquisite volley. The momentum his way hasn't he over the last 10-15 minutes and
appears to be growing in confidence. Yeah it certainly is. Look out
because having come back to 5-0 here just seems to have relaxed. It's two saved. Ordinary stuff.
Some of the crowds already celebrating. They thought it was over but they forgot he's facing
the phenomenon that is Carlos Alcaraz. Yeah whoever that guy is he's never seen Alcaraz
play before. The point isn't over until he's had his say. Look at the skills. He's got it all.
Eventually just too much for Tommy Paul and that might well rattle him having lost that point. He
must have thought he was through the game. And that's the outcome. Absolute rocket off the
Spaniard strings. Just special shot. Didn't really have much width to work with but just
on such a big point. It's almost like time stopped. Alcaraz is winding up for the forehand.
What's he going to do? This time it's the drop shot and Tommy Paul nothing he could do about it.
Carlos Alcaraz absorbing opening set against Tommy Paul. That's one of the many reasons he is
the world number one. It was the battling qualities this time on display. He's taken it in 62 minutes.
Employing Tommy Paul's technique. Different story this time. He does seem to have just
so good because well he didn't really have to with Tommy Paul. Very deep in the court but
always just having a bit of fun here and using the breeze on the drop shot. Just hanging it out.
He's got him again this time with the volley. That's how high his standards are. He put himself
into position. Once more. Oh beautiful. Took it so early. It's dipped just in time. Rock solid
from Tommy Paul. Had exactly the right time. Corner to corner. Well he chose not to follow
the penultimate forehand to the net. Just wondered if it would cost him but it proved to be the right
decision. A big strike into the corner. Just too much for Alcaraz. Goodness. A couple of ferocious
forehands and then the killer drop shot once more. How good was that? 5-4-30 all to produce that sort
of touch. Well it's as good as it gets for me in terms of a drop shot. I love the trajectory and
the speed he played it with. It wasn't a sort of high floater. It was just quick. Almost like a
short ball as much as a drop shot. Quick and saved. Carlos. Activity this time before.
Well he actually showed great composure here because he got himself in a complete mess trying
to hit a forehand. But he just kept his focus on the point and what a pass. He does. Dipped in
as well. Remarkable. That's when you think you've held serve. Almost got him again at any of the lines but
it didn't need to be because it was almost impossible for the American to change direction
Point saved. Oh just wide. No way. What was that bounce? And how on earth has he won that point?
Nobody can believe it. It's carnage on centre court. The crowd are on their feet. It's one of
the most bizarre points. Three saved. Tommy Paul takes us into a decider. He's saved three match
points. Produces a 7-0 tie break. And we are going the distance.
Somebody in the firing line. 40-15. Intensity from the Spaniards. Second. But it's another game
he is away so. Alcaraz steam train will be switching to bullet train mode.
Just brilliant defense. A little tentative wasn't he with that forehand Alcaraz. To return again he's
had a couple of beauties in this game. Into the quarterfinals here at the Western and Southern
Open. He gets his revenge from last week after Tommy Paul beat him in Toronto. But about five
and a half hours later after they first made their way onto centre court this afternoon.
It is Alcaraz who prevails against Tommy Paul and will take on
Max Purcell in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
