This Was Too Cold… First Nights After the Crash | 19 Year Old Solo Car Camping

I wasn't planning on filming this.
Yesterday I crashed my car.
I went into the back of someone.
I've been to two garages.
Both of them have said the same thing,
which is that it's done.
You know, one guy just said 6,000 pounds,
so the car's done.
Incredible how it just all ends in one second.
Hello, I'm Nesta.
I just turned 19 years old,
and today you join me on my two-month road trip
around Europe.
So far, I've been to Scotland, the Netherlands,
Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary.
The plan was to head south to Italy,
but when leaving Munich, I had an accident,
which has now put the whole trip in jeopardy.
So now I'm on a random street in Munich,
working out what the hell to do.
I'm currently in Munich,
and I'm just trying to do things
to sort of get it all working, get myself sorted.
So I'm packing up bags and things,
but I've got my, I don't know how I'm gonna get
all of this back to the UK.
So I'll sort this out.
I'll probably still go to my friends,
just so then I have somewhere to be
and I can figure things out,
and then I'll get a train back to the UK.
So I went to my friends.
I was in Austria to think things through
and come up with a plan,
because I had two real big problems.
Problem number one was what to do with my car,
because I obviously couldn't just leave it in Munich,
and problem number two was what to do with all of my stuff,
because basically everything I owned was in that car.
You know, my bike, my clothes, all of my camping stuff.
And during this time, I came up with three options.
Option number one would be to ship all of my stuff
back to the UK and then sell the car
as it was just on the street in Munich.
This is what the garage had suggested to do,
but I wasn't so keen on this,
because what should I do while I'm organizing all of this?
You know, I couldn't live in my car
while I'm packing everything.
It just seemed too complicated.
So, option number two would be to ship the whole car
back to the UK on a truck.
This seemed like quite a good option, actually,
because it's sort of two birds and one stone.
You know, my car, all of the stuff inside of it,
plus it gave me the option to potentially fix my car
once I was back in the UK.
Option number three would be to see if the car
was mechanically safe to drive,
and then just slowly limp the car back to England,
just avoiding the motorway.
And if that was possible,
obviously that would be a great option.
So the option which ended up happening
was secret option number four,
which I didn't tell you guys about.
So my dad had called his German friend
who liked cars and knew someone in Germany
who worked on pre-war cars,
and he happened to be just an hour outside of Munich,
and he had his own workshop and garage.
So I got in contact with this person,
I sent him some pictures of the state of my car,
and he came back saying,
yeah, I think that we can do it.
I still wasn't sure whether we'd get it to a state
that I could drive home safely,
or to an even better state
where I could actually continue my trip.
Anyways, the next day I strapped down the bonnet
so it wouldn't fly open.
I tried to bend the metal a bit
to make it look a bit better,
and I drove an hour to go see this person,
and hopefully we can make something happen.
So compared to the state it was before,
it's so much better.
The important thing is that this gap is much smaller here,
and that this now sits down,
so this is properly closed as it should be
in the normal way.
This is smaller.
We also bent this all here,
so now I can open my door,
at least on this side.
But yeah, this is all new,
this is just from trying to get it into shape.
Sort of looks like I hit a person on the head.
But, oh, it's been a, it was a pretty bad few days.
I mean, it was fun with my friend,
but then just the whole time thinking about
what the hell am I gonna do?
Thinking it was the end of the trip.
As you've probably worked out by now,
it's not the end of the trip.
The trip goes on somehow.
This wasn't even one of my options.
I didn't even think this would happen.
And I'm currently in the Alps, back in Austria.
I drove from Munich today.
I've had no problems so far.
And I've pulled over here
because I saw a sign to skiing,
and I just thought, you know,
why would I not go skiing for a couple of days
if it's open and if it's not too expensive?
And so I think that's gonna be my plan.
I'm gonna drive to a ski resort now,
and rent some skis, and yeah.
Tomorrow I'll be on the slopes, which is pretty exciting.
I came back in here because of the trucks.
But yeah, I'm just so grateful to my dad's friend
and the mechanic today who helped me.
He was so, so nice.
Now it's time to get some skis.
We've got skis.
That is exciting.
Now I'm gonna go to the supermarket,
buy some things to bring up to the slopes for tomorrow
to eat, and then I'm gonna go
and get my ski pass for tomorrow.
So somehow, after everything,
I made it here and I'm going skiing tomorrow,
which is just the craziest thing in the world
given where I was, like, a few days ago.
I'm about to make some Käsespätzle,
which is the thing I've been making a lot of recently.
But this time, I think I'm gonna do it well.
It's now a bit of a squeeze in here
because I've got all of the skiing stuff all along here,
and I've just shoved everything else into the front,
like the drone and things.
But yeah, I'm gonna start cooking.
So I'm gonna get some rest
and try to wake up pretty early.
First lift up and last lift down is basically the plan.
Right, so last night was definitely my coldest night.
The outside of the car is frozen
and the inside of the windscreen,
so the water on the inside of here, is a bit icy.
Oh, God, that was cold.
I did sleep, though, because that's the important thing.
And now I just gotta get changed and eat breakfast
so I can go skiing.
Yeah, that is cold.
So now at the top of Tyrol, about to go skiing.
What a change.
All right, so I've done quite a few runs now,
having the best time.
The weather's just perfect.
It's sunny, there's no wind, nothing.
It's a bit icy in places.
But I'm not complaining, it's the one when I'm skiing.
All right, I think this is gonna be nearing my last one.
It is about to close, so I've basically done the whole day.
But it's starting to get pretty icy now,
like very, very icy, as it comes to the end of the day.
So much fun.
On the way down, I was thinking about where I was,
even just yesterday morning,
where everything had seemed like it had fallen apart.
And now I was coming down from a full day skiing.
And it just goes to prove that old adage
that things can only get better.
Although I was thinking about just how lucky I got
and was hoping that my luck hadn't run out.
So I've dropped off my skis, which is a sad moment.
Now I'm gonna drive to a town, which is very nearby,
and stay the night there, because chap promises
that there's good mountain biking there,
which I'll do tomorrow.
Okay, I've been pretty unsuccessful
in finding somewhere to stay tonight.
Well, I found one place,
but it's outside a closed restaurant, which is also a house.
So I'm just gonna ask them if I can stay here for the night.
Let's go.
And I brought out the GCC German as well.
Nice, perfect.
All right, so it's only 5.30
and it's 20.4 degrees in here.
So I'm gonna try and keep that heat as much as I can.
So I've already got all of the covers up,
but today I've got the curtain up.
So I'm gonna have that,
but I'm also gonna put this blanket over it.
And then I'm gonna sleep with my sleeping bag as well,
just because I don't have so much charge on the power bank
because I've not been driving so much today.
So I can have the electric blanket for a little bit,
but it was cold last night.
So I'm gonna try and stop that from happening.
All right, I've got no idea
whether that will make any difference at all.
Still got this whole massive bit here.
It's now in the morning.
I slept for a total of 12 hours,
but to be fair, I was waking up quite a bit
because it's so cold, it's flipping freezing.
On the temperature right now, 3.6 degrees, nice.
I don't think it's really that cold in here actually.
I think it feels more like five or six or something.
But again, the front windscreen is frozen.
I don't know why only that one freezes and not the side,
but anyways, it's sunny again.
I'm gonna have the same breakfast as yesterday
and then go find somewhere to go and use my bike
because I've only used it once
this whole trip up in Scotland.
I feel like I've spent the whole time
getting it in the roof box and all the extra fuel.
So I should at least use it.
All right, so I've got everything in the car sorted.
As you probably saw in the videos, it was a bit of a mess.
This is where I stayed last night
and the man who lives in that house
came out this morning to say hi.
He was super friendly, didn't speak much English,
which I like, so I got to use my German,
which is quite limited,
but we did actually talk about quite a few things.
He was saying that it's gonna be like 20 degrees here
the next few days, so hopefully that's also true of Italy
because I'm definitely ready for some warmer weather.
It is really cold.
I'm gonna start driving to Italy
and in the end, I'm gonna go mountain biking there.
But the police following me,
I drove past them as they were turning out
and they definitely would have seen the front of the car.
So as you can imagine, I'm quite on edge.
Oh yes, I've made it into Italy across the border.
So now the police are no longer behind me.
I was quite nervous, I have to be honest,
because the risk is, you know, they say,
well, yeah, you cannot drive this auto
now that most of the cars look like mine, so.
So.
I've set up my solar, I've got it locked here
to get some extra charge, which is pretty nice
because I'm only on about 40%.
So hopefully by the time I come back, I'll be maybe 50.
But yeah, that's actually pretty neat.
That works quite well.
So there are these crazy earth pyramids, they call them.
See them down there.
These are nuts.
So it's just very particular conditions.
Oh my God, yeah, look.
I mean, I'll show you when I'm closer,
but they have these boulders on top of them,
which were just there before.
And you see, send the boulders to protect from the rain.
That's crazy.
That is literally nuts.
Right, that was a big climb.
Luckily it was on the road though.
Little bit more climbing to go,
but I mean, look at how nice it is.
The Dolomites in the background, crazy.
I've just gone to the bathroom in this.
Super nice hotel.
So I feel like I should get out of here
because obviously I don't have a room.
Look, they have like wine, it's crazy.
This place is super nice.
Like they've got a swimming pool in the back,
the sauna, everything.
Hotel Tan, if you're looking for somewhere
in the Dolomites, this is pretty good.
That's the least I can do for just using the toilet.
Not having a room.
Right, now finally time for the descent.
All right, I made it back to the car, all in one piece.
That was so awesome.
That's my favorite kind of biking.
Just like, you know, good views for a good downhill as well.
So I'm gonna, I think I'm gonna sleep here tonight.
I'm not seeing any signs which say you can't
and as far as I can tell, it's free.
I'm gonna leave the bike built
so that tomorrow I can do an even bigger ride.
It's really annoying, they've got these big bins.
They've only got paper, metal, glass and paper
and I've pretty much only got plastic.
Well, I'll find somewhere else.
So tonight I'm gonna leave the bike here
so that I don't have to deconstruct
and construct it again tomorrow.
I've got it locked on the door handle.
I mean, it's a bit dodgy,
but it feels like quite a safe, safe area.
So the Blue Yeti didn't charge as much as I'd hoped.
I was hoping for maybe 10% more, but it's down about five.
Still, I hope that that's gonna be enough
for a bit of heat tonight
because the last two nights have been pretty cold.
It should also be warmer here generally,
I'm a bit, I'm probably a thousand metres lower,
lower down, but we will see.
So currently I'm responding to people
over on Buy Me A Coffee and once I've done this,
I'm going to, I think I'm gonna have some chilli tonight,
which is good.
I've got like the lights in my face,
it's like the makeup's out,
but it's not too cold, which is nice.
I mean, it's 14 degrees in here.
This morning it was like three and a half,
so that's pretty good.
Tonight, I think I'm making my best meal of my whole trip.
I'm gonna have rice with chilli,
which is gonna be, yeah, I'm really excited for it.
I don't know if it's the rice or the chilli,
but something's not quite right.
So I've been editing the first of the Europe series.
I would show you, because it's quite cool,
but you would have already seen it by now.
But yeah, it's incredible.
It's 11 o'clock already when you're editing,
the time, like nothing else, the time just goes so quickly.
But yeah, I'm excited to finish this one.
It's quite fun watching back all the old footage
and remembering, well, there's something which I'd forgotten
and then I watch it again and I remember.
I think it was someone in the comments that told me,
but using wet wipes just to do the final bit of washing
and rinsing is so useful.
Fortunately, I brought the wrong camera.
I brought the one which was out of charge.
So we're gonna have to live with the iPhone 7 camera.
But I am finished, I am so dead.
I think I cycled up like 1,200 meters, maybe more,
but the view is so nice.
I've not been this exhausted in a long, long time.
I'm really dead and I'm hungry as well.
Anyways, I'm gonna get down and then...
All right, that is the bike back in the roof box.
I never film it
because it is just the worst job in the world,
but there we go.
Right, now I need to get myself organized
and then I'm driving to see Chiara,
who's an Italian friend that lives in Bolzano,
which is only like 20 minutes away or something.
So it'd be nice to have a shower.
Just waiting for Chiara to get here on a train.
I'm parked outside our house
and I thought about going to get some pizza,
but I decided that I spent too much money skiing,
so I'm gonna just cook some pasta.
I've got lots of spaghetti.
Quite funny, just cooking here on some random street
that quite a few people are about.
I think it's gotten to the point
where this could qualify as a cooking channel.
I feel like I film a lot of cooking.
But right now, I'm making one of my favorite meals.
I'm making tomato and tuna spaghetti.
I'm so excited.
The whole time I was up there and hiking up,
I didn't bring much food.
I didn't bring any food, actually, which is crazy.
And the whole time I was just thinking
about what I was gonna eat when I get back.
This is, yeah, this is pretty good.
All right, I've decided to embrace the cooking show.
So to make your sauce, get a good tomato sauce,
ideally like a marinara one, which has garlic in it,
but you can make your own.
Then a lot of pepper.
Okay, and then this is the secret, the secret stuff,
the Cholula hot sauce.
I know it's like, probably not what it was designed for
and probably Mexican people and Italian people
don't approve of this, but trust me.
And then the tuna, but don't drain too much of the oil,
just a little bit,
because the oil is good for the flavor as well.
And then also you wanna try and not break it up too much.
So you want chunks of tuna rather than sort of flaky pieces.
You guys have no idea how excited I am to eat this.
All right, so I made it to Bozano and now I'm with Chiara.
We've been in Bozano for like two days
and now we're driving to go to Lake Garda
and then to Verona after which is where
she goes to university.
The parents have been so nice.
I've got like cheese, meat, like a whole thing of wine.
It's been so good.
No, yeah, it's so good.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
So we're now in Trento.
We just had the authentic Italian church experience.
It was good fun.
It's a nice cathedral though, church cathedral,
I don't know.
It's like half a castle, half a cathedral.
Oh damn, there's another castle.
You're allowed to do the toll.
Hey, okay, okay, we did it, we did it.
Okay, let's go.
Nice.
It was awful.
Great, man, great.
Man, it was so bad.
So I've just done the one night here in Verona
and now it's time to go to Bologna
which I'm really looking forward to going to.
I've never been there before
but I think it's like a really cool old, old city.
Thank you so much for watching this week's episode.
I hope that you enjoyed it
and I'll give you a small spoiler for next week
which is that I go to Bologna, Siena and Florence
and as the saying goes that things come in threes,
I do have one more bit of bad luck.
As always, a big thank you
to my Buy Me A Coffee and PayPal supporters
and another thank you to my dad,
his friend and the mechanic.
