Over time, I’ve received many requests asking how to display botanicals gathered from the garden—the quiet, often-overlooked treasures discovered while simply walking and observing.
Here, on the cusp of spring, there are still berries to be found, along with the final offerings of last season’s growth. We often pause to admire these details, but rarely think to pick them and enjoy their beauty indoors. This arrangement is an invitation to do just that.
I’ll share how to create a design that is led by berries, supported by the occasional found treasure, resulting in a display that feels natural, restrained, and deeply seasonal.
Things to Gather:
A vase of your choice
A vintage white 1950s/60s boat-shaped vase works particularly well
Not too tall or too long, but deep enough to hold forms securely
Found botanicals from the garden
I used bromeliads, ibex berries, clivia berries, and a few cordyline leaves
A Tip from Me:
The bromeliad will take root, and the berries will last for weeks—making this a perfect style of designing for busy lives, when you still want a moment of simple floral joy.
Welcome everyone to my blog
Today I’ll share some of my favorite designs I’ve created over the years
The reason I'm sharing this beautiful design today
is that I was at church where they were cleaning it
Someone asked if anyone
wanted it and I replied "Fine
if no one else does I'll keep it"—it's really great
Look how beautiful it is
It's a vase shaped like a boat
It was very popular in the fifties and sixties
I'm so happy to have it
Well
I'll keep it along with some papers and the tutei
I'll show you just how easy and quick it is to transform something
into a long-lasting indoor plant decoration that will last for weeks
I have these flowers here
Brilliant flowers
I love them so much
Now I'll place these here
And these as well I'll put them here
First Look and think
Should I rearrange them
Should I put this one here or that one there
No I'll place that one because it bends this way
Then I'll place these here to make them slightly longer
I have these nice sheets here
so I'll put these rope sheets down and inside them
I just
want a bit of weight or color
depth on the other side—I'm thinking
—do I really need to use those No I think these alone will be perfect
Now
I have this
Look at this
Isn't it wonderful
I love it
Okay
We'll call it here
the shrub of splendor
But it's not a delicate shrub in reality
but it's very beautiful
I'll put it there
I'll place
it there now when I
look at it I
wonder if it's too
long Yes I think
so but what
strikes me is that it's moving
He moves quickly
Oh my God
My fingers aren't working properly
I can now place it underneath
Haha
And now everything fits together beautifully
I now have this
and I also have
I'm not entirely sure where it came from
I think it might be a kielivia plant
I don't know
But they were such beautiful
fruits I saw and I said
to myself Oh I'm really taken with you
so I'll place them down below
I'll also place these down here like this
then I have two more of these
I love designing this way
That's what I call smart design—
things I've discovered during my
life's journey or items from the
garden that I can bring inside
And using it for something else
Oh
I've descended very slowly
but look at that
now
Do I need to bring some of these No
I don't think I need to add
anything else now—this is what will happen it will
be the first thing addressed
So I'll remove the kurdolien
leaves when something else happens —that
is when these fruits dry out and once they dry and spoil—
I can remove it and keep the beautiful
small pitchers here these will turn black
But it will take a long time before it spreads and ruins everything
But even when that happens
I'll still have beautiful branches
Another great thing is that since there's water here
this plant will grow and then
I can put it in the garden
And thus I'll get another harvest of jasmine flowers
This is one of my favorite designs
I've been doing things
like this for a long
time and I truly love it I hope you've enjoyed this
I enjoyed sharing with you
and look forward to seeing you again another
day goodbye
