Socrates (summary) | PHILOSOPHY
Born in Athens in 470/468 BC, the son of Sophroniscus, a sculptor, and Phaenarete, a midwife, Socrates is considered by some to be the founder of Classical Philosophy. By all accounts, he studied Geometry and Astronomy with Archelaus and approached Anaxagoras' conception of the cosmos. He left the city only three times, and all of them to fight in the Peloponnesian War.
He never held an important political office, like Pericles, for example, having only participated in the city's courts three times. In the first two instances, he refused to obey orders that went against Athenian law. The third time he was in court, he was as an accused. In his trial, he was sentenced to death, dying at the age of 70.
