Huawei.
____________________
Welcome back. I'm Tiffany Meyer. After pressure from the US,
the European Union is working to improve its cyber security amid a growing threat from China.
The bloc is considering a proposal to phase out gear supplied by companies like Huawei.
And today's international correspondent, Aaron Posdar, tells the story.
The European Union is working to protect its critical infrastructure,
such as high-speed telecom networks. Under new draft legislation,
telecom equipment from so-called high-risk suppliers would be phased out within three years.
This comes amid rising concerns that European countries are vulnerable to the dominance of
Chinese tech manufacturing. The proposals don't mention any countries or companies by name,
but the term high-risk has been previously used to refer to countries like China,
home to tech giant Huawei. Commenting on the new draft, the EU tech chief says,
With the new cybersecurity package, we will have the means in place to better protect
our critical supply chains, but also to combat cyberattacks decisively.
The proposed restrictions would also cover equipment in other sectors,
like security scanners used at border checkpoints, water supply systems,
and health and medical devices. The US already banned new Chinese equipment in 2022
and has urged European allies to follow suit. Last year, the Trump administration issued an
executive order aimed at strengthening the nation's cybersecurity. The White House released
a statement at the time, saying the People's Republic of China presents the most active
and persistent cyber threat to United States government, private sector,
and critical infrastructure networks. And just two months ago, the administration released its
2025 National Security Strategy. It highlights China's cyber activities in the context of
economic competition, intellectual property theft, and supply chain threats. The document warns of
grand-scale intellectual property theft and industrial espionage. Arian Pasdar, NTD News.
