Scientists are monitoring a rare and powerful solar radiation storm, the most severe of its kind in more than two decades. Officials at the Space Weather Prediction Center say the storm is being driven by intense solar activity.
The last time such levels were observed was in October 2003, when the center says the storms caused power outages in Sweden and damage to transformers in South Africa.
But the center also says increased solar activity can result in spectacular auroras. It urged people in the Northern United States to look out for the Northern Lights.
