Hey everyone, welcome back to my channel for another tutorial.
Today I'm going to show you how to paint on a blue canvas
and I've already begun painting a 16 by 20 double primed and stretched canvas.
I'm using Prussian blue and I made my own shade of Prussian blue
with phthalo blue and a little bit of black.
So I'm just going to paint the entire canvas
this beautiful blue shade and then I'll show you how to create
a lovely little painting with this color for the backdrop.
It's really fun to experiment with painting on different colored canvases
and I've got quite a few examples here on my channel
so I hope you enjoy them all. Okay now that I've got this painted I'm going to
dry it off and then we're going to start coming in
with some white. Okay now that it's all dry
I'm going to be using a filbert brush. This one is a number 10
roughly one inch. I've got some titanium white here.
My brush is a little bit wet and I'm just going to take
a little bit of the white and we're going to start
by adding a little line just below the middle mark of the canvas
and I'm just going to continue to pull it over
towards the right and then when we almost get all the way over there we're
going to start pulling it back back and forth making it a little bit
wider down here. Okay let's do that again so a little bit
more white a little bit of water back and forth
pulling it over to the right and then back over to the left.
I'm going to take my brush and gently pull and sweep
taking a little bit more white and a little bit of water.
The water helps to thin the white out making it a little bit more
transparent like. This will help give us more shades of white and even
make it appear that there's more shades of blue as well.
Okay and then I'm going to come in on this side and lightly go
up and down bringing it up a little bit higher
than this line here. Okay then I'm going to pull
lightly over the base of those lines they're going to be trees.
I'm going to take a little bit of white and start going
under and adding these little scoops. I'm going to make them a little smaller
down here and a little bigger up top. I'm going to
soften by turning my brush over like this
and just using the tip of my brush not adding any more paint.
I'm just softening what's already there to form
some light and airy clouds. Then I'm going to take a little bit more
white I'm going to add a little sun or moon
can be either or. I'll add a little bit extra white
in the center and I'm going to start coming in with
some branches on the trees mixing just a little bit of water into that
white. I'm going to just tap with a tip of my
brush and then come down and make
those branches a little bit wider. You can turn your brush to make a tree
trunk where you don't have one and maybe you want to add one
and just keep all those other lines as backdrop blurry forest
a blurry forest behind this one. It's really nice to have some out of focus
areas in your painting and not have everything
be in full focus. It's not until I get part way down the tree that I start
using more width of the brush but when I'm up
here at the very top I'm just using a little
bit of the brush only. That helps you control
the size that you're adding so if you're just working on a really small area and
a small branch you just want to be using the tip of the brush only like this
and then gradually make it a little bigger
by pushing a little bit harder. I'm going to soften
some of these snow-covered branches just by pulling and gently sweeping over.
I'm going to come in here and add another tree
a little bit more white this time less water
pulling and sweeping over to build up some snow
on either side. Set a little fence around here
We'll start up here just a few thin lines and some bigger
lumps of snow as we get further down and we'll get a little bit on the edge
here too. We could have a little who knows maybe
there's a little waterfall. Pull and sweep and drop and then we'll
just brush and wiggle gently along the end of your
brush with a bit of white. Pull and drag and drop or make these
just a little bit thicker. I'm just going to brighten up this moon.
I'm going to just take my finger and just smooth that out a little bit.
Okay I'm going to take some more watered down white
and a little tree in here a little big tree I guess
a few little branches. Once we add those little branches
we can start tapping with the full width of the brush
Let's make it a little bit fuller in some areas.
Kind of a little bit more snow on the side here.
It's going to be brighter above so it'll bring this up higher
and make this dark spot look lower and below this
and in shadow. This is how you build up depth and layers in a landscape. I'm just
going to add a few little dry brushed lines back in here
kind of out of focus tree trunks and take a little bit more
white. I'm going to brush and sweep slightly bringing it up over into an
arch. I'm going to add another little
gentle fix like this and some shorter trees to give this a
just a little bit more depth and distance in the painting.
Just tapping to soften and add a little bit more texture.
I'm going to add the final finishing touches a little bit of white
right in here. I'm going to add a little bit of
white for some brighter highlights. Maybe just another little drop
of a waterfall right here. Okay well I hope you guys enjoyed this
um moody blue winter landscape. Thanks for watching.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts and comments below.
I'll see you guys all very soon in another video. Have fun painting!
Bye!
