Long, long ago, in a remote seaside village in ancient China, there lived a terrifying monster beneath the sea called the Nian Beast (年兽).
The Nian Beast was enormous, with a ferocious appearance — part lion, part dragon. Its body was covered in thick, matted fur caked with mud, and it had razor-sharp teeth and gleaming, piercing eyes. Most of the time, it slumbered deep within an underwater cave.
