In 1417, Paduka Pahala—the East King of Sulu—traveled thousands of kilometers from the southern Philippines to the Ming Dynasty. He never made it home. After dying in Dezhou on his return journey, the Ming court buried him with the full honors of a Chinese prince. His descendants remained in China, protected and supported by emperors across centuries, becoming part of the local community while preserving their Islamic traditions.
