Thank you all so much for being here tonight.
It means the world to me.
Hello there.
And what's your name?
My name is Sophia Bennett.
How old are you, sweetheart?
I'm 14 years old, and I'm from San Francisco, California.
And what are you going to do for us today, Sophia?
I'm going to sing a gospel song that I wrote myself.
It's a song of praise and thanksgiving
to my Lord and Savior.
How beautiful.
And who is that lovely lady backstage with the tears?
That's my Grandma Rose.
She's my guardian angel on Earth.
She raised me after I lost my parents and my baby brother
in an earthquake.
And she taught me how to find light in the darkest moments.
I'm so sorry to hear that, Sophia.
Would you like to share what happened?
I grew up in a small town outside San Francisco.
We were a Christian family.
Every Sunday, we went to church together.
Every night, we prayed together.
My daddy would lead us in prayer,
and my mama would sing hymns while she cooked dinner.
My mama had the most beautiful voice.
She was the lead singer in our church choir.
People would come from other towns just to hear her sing.
She always said that her voice was a gift from God,
and she was just borrowing it to bring him glory.
She sounds like a beautiful soul.
She was.
They all were.
My baby brother was named Daniel.
He was only two years old.
He had these big brown eyes and the sweetest spirit.
Even at two, he would raise his little hands during worship
like he was praising God.
On October 17th, 2019, I was six years old.
It was just a normal Tuesday morning.
My daddy prayed over our breakfast like he always did.
He thanked God for another day,
for his family, for his blessings.
I didn't know, no.
I didn't know that would be his last prayer on earth.
At 7.43 in the morning, the earthquake hit.
It was a large magnitude.
The whole world started shaking.
Everything was falling.
Everything was breaking.
I was so scared.
I started praying.
I cried out for God to save me.
My daddy burst through my door.
He grabbed me.
He tried to carry me out,
but the floor collapsed beneath us.
We fell through to the first floor.
A heavy beam fell on my leg.
I felt terrible pain.
I was screaming.
Take your time.
My daddy, he used all his strength
to push the beam off of me.
With his bare hands, he lifted that beam
just enough for me to crawl out.
But when he did, more of the ceiling came down.
It came down right on top of him.
I crawled to him.
I held his hand.
Then he closed his eyes
and he went home to his Lord.
What about your mom and brother?
They found my mama in the kitchen.
She was holding Daniel in her arms,
protecting him with her body.
The rescuers said she was still holding him
when they found her.
She never let go of her baby.
They went to heaven together.
I was trapped in the rubble for 11 hours.
They had to take my leg to save my life.
Grandma Rose was there.
She told me that I was the only one left.
My whole family, my mama, my daddy,
my baby brother Daniel, they were all in heaven.
I asked God, why did you take them?
Why did you leave me alone?
How did you survive that, sweetheart?
How did you find the strength?
For months, I didn't pray.
I didn't sing.
I felt like God had abandoned me.
One night, I had a dream.
I saw my mama, my daddy, and Daniel
standing in the most beautiful light.
My mama was singing.
My daddy was smiling.
Daniel was laughing.
I woke up crying, but they were different tears.
They were tears of gratitude.
He didn't abandon me.
He carried me.
He saved me.
He gave me a purpose.
Tonight, I'm going to thank him
in front of the whole world.
This song is called, Thank You, God.
I wrote it for my Lord.
For carrying me when I couldn't walk,
for holding me when I was broken,
giving me hope when I had none,
and for keeping my family safe in his arms
until I see them again.
Whenever you're ready, Sophia.
Lord, I don't know why you chose to save me
when the ground broke open and swallowed my world.
I lost my daddy, my mama, my brother,
but somehow you kept me, your precious little girl.
So I lift my voice to say,
thank you, Lord.
Thank you, Lord,
for the breath inside my lungs.
Thank you, Lord.
Thank you, Lord,
for the battles you have won.
Thank you, Lord.
Daddy gave his life for me,
just like Jesus on that tree.
Now they're dancing in your glory up above.
Mama's singing with the angels.
Danny's laughing free from danger.
They're at forever in your perfect love.
So I lift my hands and say,
thank you, Lord.
Thank you, Lord,
for the family in your arms.
Thank you, Lord,
for protecting them from.
They told me I would never,
I should just accept the pain.
A broken girl with nothing left to give.
But I found strength inside your love.
My family's heart surrounded me from above.
As long as there is Jesus, they will live.
I may have lost my leg,
but I found my faith instead.
I may have lost my family here below,
but you gave me something greater.
A love that's forever.
A hope that this world can never know.
So I'll praise your name forever
in the storm and sunny weather.
You're my rock, my strength, my everything.
Thank you, Lord.
Thank you, Lord,
for the crawling free.
Sacrifice.
Thank you for my mama's lullabies.
Thank you for my brother's little smile.
Thank you for carrying me each mile.
Thank you, Lord.
