Erica looks at some of the ways that kids learn and how as adults we could apply some of these things to help the process of learning.
Kids are playful, and enjoying the process of learning instead of focusing on the outcome. While not always easy to put into practice in our own learning there are some great lessons for us all.

One thing we notice as ski teachers is how quickly kids seem to pick up skiing
and we think there's something that we can all learn from that.
While of course some kids get nervous most kids don't tend to extrapolate their fears
into the consequences of getting injured and as you can imagine kids are falling
over and bumping into things all the time whether it's in the playground on the way
to school and they're just used to people picking them up telling them they're fine
and letting them get on with their day. Kids are learning all the time and we think this
breaks down into three important points. Firstly they're taking on new information
and they're getting new feelings in all aspects of their life whether it's learning how to read
or ride a bike so adding learning skiing to the list isn't really a challenge.
Secondly they learn by doing they're not overthinking tasks they're just having a go
they're testing the boundaries of their balance they're seeing if it works just as well to ski
backwards as it does to ski forwards and finally most kids are not focused on an end goal.
I don't think I can remember a time when a kid has come up to me in a ski lesson and said
by the end of the lesson Erica I'd really like to be able to ski parallel.
It's just not who they are they're enjoying the process of learning.
And finally we've got to think about how playful kids are when they're learning to ski.
Even in a beginner area where you have tunnels to go through and little jumps to go off
straight away as soon as kids are sliding they're looking for every opportunity to make skiing more
fun and if you think of any piece whether it's a blue run a red run or a black run
you'll always see the kids on the side jumping on and off playing with all those jumps.
From a technical point of view all of this is great they're learning fantastic skills
whether it's edging their skis testing their balance or dealing with the terrain.
So all in all kids are amazing but there are some take-home messages for us adults too.
We can relax, enjoy the journey, be playful and have fun.
