There we get the shot from the
getting ready. We'll get the
athlete introductions and if
he's showing the road. Well, in
men's in men's epi, the top two
seeds made it through. Alright,
out they come. His men on men
on Brene. Uh Apetit. Is she
taking a post a post Paris. Is
it powder powder or is it a
permanent powder? Yeah. Don't
know. Okay. First up, team from
Hungary. Liza Pustai, Luca
Such, Sugar Katinka, Batai, and
in reserve, Renata Katona. For
France, Tore Toscan, Sarah
Balzer, European champion, Sarah
Nucha, and in reserve, Faustine
Clapier. Our uh officiating
crew, Reza Pekarara of Iran, and
Abdus Samit Arslan of Turkey.
Jeff, take it away. Number one
France against number four
Hungary. Hungary has won the
last two world titles in the
women's saber team event. It
could be the second country to
win three successful world
titles. France has a record
thirteen medals in this event.
Three golds, six silvers, four
bronze. They won their last
title 2018. And the French has
reached the final in each of the
last four world championships.
That's how they got there. We're
going to start off with Nucha
and Batai. Nucha took sixth in
the individual. She's third
ranked in the world. She's
twenty-five. Batai took eleventh.
She's seventh ranked in twenty-
two. Coming out of the European
championships, Nucha was
considered one of the hottest
fencers but she had a bit of a
rough go in the individual.
Look for her to come out strong
here. We are signed to start us
off. Just doing a little
mechanical housekeeping to get
us started here. David Blake,
our mechanical guru slash expert
in the United States. And
whereas the FA team matches
take all of an hour in most
cases, the saber team matches
can be over in rapid fashion in
half of that time. We are ready
to go. Nucha on the board to
beat Attack. On the preparation.
The attack first, it looked like
it missed. But the referee said
attack is good, it's being
challenged. Let's see if it hit.
It missed. It looked like it
missed. Like didn't go on on the
first action. Stand corrected.
Parry and riposte. Attack in
preparation, attack, a parry
riposte. We've seen it all from
Nucha and it's time to see
something from Batai. Still the
attack from the right, says the
referee. Good start for Nucha.
Next up, Pushtai and Balzer.
Pushtai, not so great in
individual, 39th. She's ranked
36th, she's 24. Balzer, 7th in
the individual. She's 21th
ranked and she's 30 years old.
And she was the silver medalist
last year in Paris. Right out of
the gate. Same as Nucha. They
must have a game plan, very
aggressive. Attack from the
left. You can see Pushtai got
the jump there. Here comes
Balzer. Gets the light. Still
her attack, her arm is moving
forward, threatening the
opponent's valid target, that
lame, the electric jacket. This
is classic second intention.
Balzer comes barreling forward,
waiting for Pushtai to attack
into the parry and the riposte.
There's an attack from Pushtai.
Watch her arm, she's starting.
This is the parry and the riposte
from Pushtai. Takes the blade
and the riposte. Referee's
going to take a look at this
one. It's the attack from the
right. Big beat attack by
Pushtai. Pushing, pushing,
finally drawing up. Balzer's
attack takes the blade. There's
the parry and there's the
riposte to the back. Counter
riposte from Pushtai, looks like
that's what it is. Once Balzer
short there, now Pushtai makes
her new move and it's good. And
that hurt in more ways than one
because you could see Balzer was
holding her back. Balzer again
tried that slow attack, trying
to draw up Pushtai's
counterattack, which she did.
However, she didn't hit and
Pushtai did. Okay. Good job by
Pushtai after getting hit in the
first one. She hung in there and
kept it close. Next up is
Tori, who took 8th in the
individual. She's 17th world
ranked. She's 21. Egan Such,
she's 15th in the world and
she's 22.
She took 18th in the
individual.
Attack from the left.
Tori's floating forward with her
feet, but her arm is still back.
Attack from the left. Boom with
the attack. Attack to go, she
attacked from the left. And
Luka Such has come off the bench
and now she's coming to the
first bout that she's fencing
and she's exploded here.
Another one and Tori has no
answer for these powerful attacks
by Such. Gotta get the legs
moving there. She's flat-footed.
Well, she tried, but Such was
waiting. Beautiful riposte.
Attack to go is challenged by
Tori. Let's see. Already on a
6-0 run. Will it be 7?
The reason she would get this,
I believe, is because Tori
looked for the blade after Such
stopped. She looked for the
blade. She had a moment where
Such had stopped, but then she
looked for the blade, Tori, and
Such retook the attack.
Okay, there's one on the
riposte. Okay, that's the first
time Tori's been able to go
over the middle of a piece to
Such's side. Finds the blade,
makes the riposte. She's going
in a slower speed. Such is going
in warp speed. Too fast. In
saber, it's all about the
foot speed. One fencer had it,
the other one didn't. That's an
8-2 run. Big one for Such.
Next up is Pushtai and Nucha.
Nucha went 5-1 against Batai and
Pushtai 6-5 against Balzer.
Very serious game face there.
Chance of Ale Nucha. Let's see
if she can get France back into
it here.
Acknowledged attack from the
left. We heard a lot of that in
the last leg.
And the riposte.
Attack, parry, and riposte.
Counterattack. Everything's
working here for Pushtai in this
leg.
It's a very energized Hungarian
team box.
Pushtai had her arm back there,
so the attack went to the right.
Arms back.
There's a slightly more concerned
French team box.
Quite a control.
There's a nice attack by Nucha.
Needs to do that again.
She tried to do it again, but it
was a closer distance and her arm
was back.
Riposte!
So a great leg
by Lisa Pushtai.
A little deflating.
You can see one team has a lot
of energy and the other team is
sort of just standing around
waiting for something to happen.
And
Toure is
back in.
And it wasn't happening for her
in the third leg against Such.
It was 8-2 against her.
So let's see if she can compose
herself and get something going
here.
There's the attack.
Right in the middle.
Whoa!
Nice attack by Butai.
Right back at Toure.
After she got hit on Toure's
attack, she came right back.
Toure in stages.
Pushing
and scoring.
So Butai, the last two times
Toure's been able to attack,
she got hit.
So I look for
her to go forward here.
Both times she went back,
she got hit pretty easily.
Butai tried to attack
into preparation.
The referee says it's still
the attack from the right.
Butai is challenging it.
One video review per leg.
Let's take a look.
As long as the fencer's arm
is continually
threatening the opponent's target,
it's going to be the attack.
And that call is maintained.
OK.
Toure, after that
really rough 8-2 leg
against her,
going in a much better
direction here.
Butai with a big attack
pushing
all the way down the piece.
It's parried
and the riposte.
Attack from the right,
parry, riposte.
Sweet touch
by Butai.
Now she takes over.
It's a prise de fer
from Toure.
She took the blade
as Butai was coming forward.
Watch.
That's where she took the blade.
Prise de fer means
taking of the blade.
Still the attack.
Very effective for Butai.
Good job by Toure.
She came back from the rough leg
but she wasn't able to
chip away at anything.
Just stayed level.
5-5.
And that brings up Such
against Balzer.
Balzer went 5-6
against Pushtai
and we all remember
Such went 8-2
against Toure.
Can she build on that?
Such ready to jump
out of the gate.
She went to test the weapon
while Balzer was still
in her two meter zone.
She's ready to go.
Attack missed.
Balzer didn't do
anything really
special to get that.
Just hit on the
counter attack.
There's Such's attack.
That's the attack
from Balzer
pushing.
Such was in big trouble
down there.
Here comes the attack.
Gets through.
Such is quicker
on this mark
and watch her arm start.
Yes!
Pretty simple to see there.
Attack from the right.
And another!
Hungary had four medals
out of the five World Cups.
They had a gold,
two silvers,
and a bronze.
France won
the last two World Cups
and they also had
a silver and a bronze.
There's Pushtai's attack
from the left.
Let's take a look.
They're going to review it.
Balzer using
her one challenge here.
As I said,
both of the fencers
prepared and stopped
and then Such
was the one
who got off the mark quicker.
Attack from the right.
There's a lot of actions
in the box there.
Right there.
Four meter zone
between the on-guard lines.
So both fencers
have used their challenges.
Neither one has one left.
Neither one successful
when they used it.
That's the attack
and Balzer
has reduced
the six-point deficit
to two.
And another
from Balzer
and Such has been
so successful in the attack.
Balzer's not allowing
her to get going.
Ref's going to look
at this one.
Pecoraro.
Balzer thinks it's hers.
Such thinks it's hers.
But it only matters
who Pecoraro thinks.
Here's the referee
and she started first.
These are close.
A few catcalls
from the stands.
Yep, it happens here too.
Here comes Pushtai.
Here comes Such.
And she closes it out.
Nice job
by Sarah Balzer.
Cuts the six-point deficit
into three
with an 8-5 leg.
So Such has been
in a couple of
Donnybrooks there.
8-2 for her
and 5-8 against her.
Up next
Pushtai and Tourie.
And
Tourie
she was
the beneficiary
of that 8-2
drubbing by Such
but she fenced
much better
in the fifth leg
going 5-5 with Patai.
Let's see if
she can build on that.
Pushtai was
5-2 over Nucha
and 6-5 over Balzer.
She's fencing
really well.
Preparation
it's the attack.
Contrasting styles
Pushtai very quick
on her feet
Tourie more
methodical.
That was quick.
Big reach again.
Tall.
Still the attack
from the right.
You see
that
Pushtai hit first
you can see
she hits right there
but the arm
is still going forward
weapon
threatening
the target
and the referee
is going to give
that attack
from the right.
Tourie with a
nice attack
in stages
pushing once
pushing twice
finally Pushtai
is out of room
and she got
pushed
and Pushtai
pushes back
with her own
attack.
It's being
challenged
but that's
her attack
in my opinion
but they're
taking a long
long look at it
the longer the look
this could get
reversed
this might
very well get
reversed
we'll see
they're continuing
to look at it
so it looked
at first blush
to me
attack from the left
that's the way
it was called
she goes
yeah that was
mine wasn't it
here comes
the ref
Arslan
he's changed
the call
to simultaneous
neither one
gets it
and
Fensers are generally
okay with that
they'd rather
throw it out
nobody gets it
than maybe
the wrong person
gets it
very effective
on the attack
is Tauri
pushing
hopping
and scoring
gonna take a look
at this one first
both Fensers
pleading their case
that it was theirs
attack from the left
attack is
nowhere parried
a little more
concern now
on the team
what a nice touch
by Tauri
just hopping
and floating
and flying
and finally drawing
out the attack
and making
the riposte
takes the blade
makes the riposte
Arslan thinks
maybe the push type
could have pulled
her arm back
at the very last second
she did
fist pump there
within one
and Tauri
has tied the score
complete change
of momentum here
and the attack
to take the lead
amazing effort there
by Toscana Tauri
she was
tremendous effort
there
great effort
and has changed
the whole tenor
of this match
with an 8-4
you gotta give her credit
she was
blown off the piece
by Such
in the third leg
did really well
5-5 with the tie
and now she's come back
to give her team
the lead
great effort
this brings us to
our eighth
next to last
and penultimate
leg
Such
and Nucha
attack from the right
and you look at the
two team boxes
and it has changed
one team was
down in the dumps
and now they're on top
of the world
and Hungary
at one point
was smiles and laughter
and this looks a concern
right now
the tackle fair
says the ref
beat attack
watch the beat
there's the beat
there's the attack
attack is no
Nucha using her
length
scores in the
counter attack
scored in the
counter
and Drew
Such
short
same thing
two in a row
with the concern
right there
on the Hungarian box
Nucha
once you hit
there's a period
of time
then when the
when the machine
would block out
the opponent
from hitting
that seems to be
what happened there
another attack
by Nucha
looks like she started
back from the right
this time
she gets the light
on to Such
a little bit closer
takes the blade
Nucha again
tried the counter attack
she's been successful
twice
not that time
Oh!
what a nice touch
by Such
faint attack
Nucha got nailed
on that one
nice attack
by Such
Nucha went to the
well for the
fourth time
she got the first two
she got hit
on the next two
with the counter attack
Such was able
to get just a little
bit closer
in the last two
she changed the distance
just enough
to get the light on
and Nucha
closes it out
that was a 5-5
that will bring us
to the ninth
and final leg
first one
to 45
will win
and be competing
for the world
championship
later on
and it's Batai
and Balzer
here's the
Olympic silver
medalist
Balzer
number one
France against
number four
Hungary
the card
to Balzer
starting
before the referee
said LA
quick off the mark
again
right in the middle
of the piece
quick off the mark
again
same action
by Balzer
Batai is either
going to have to
pull distance
and retreat
draws Balzer short
because she's getting
beaten to the punch
three in a row
brings France
two away
still the attack
Sarah
Balzer on fire
here
four nothing run
one away
that's attack
from the left
first time Batai
has been able to
beat Balzer
to the punch
let alone put a light on
that's a red card
there it is
if you jump the gun
can't move
you can't flinch
until the referee says
LA
we'll go
Paris repose
for Balzer
and she takes
France
into the gold
medal match
for a chance
to win the world
championship
later on
great job
by her
but I'm going to
give the MVP
to Tori
who came back
from that
A2 drubbing
to come back
to A4
against Pushta
she changed the match
around
well done France
big smile
on the face
of Sarah Balzer
I got to tell you
Jeff
I spoke to
Matt Thomas
Cock
and I said
was that six
foot hits
and he smiled
and he said
yes
but I don't know
how it happened
well you know
when you train
for years and years
over and over
yes
it becomes like
muscle memory
you just do it
exactly
you know
he just smiled
and said
yeah
but I don't know
how it happened
that was exciting
it's very exciting
when a fencer
like in the case
of Tori
had such a rough
go of it
that can snowball
and go in the other
direction
yeah
and for her
to come back
like that
doesn't always
happen
very exciting
for her
well
Tuscan Tori
has been a
really nice
addition
to the
French team
and it's
