Butoh Dancer: "Feel the Great Winds of Udo Island"

This is the interview with the remarkable Japanese #Butoh dancer Masamichi Shibasaki. Butoh is a Japanese #dance-form that first appeared after World War 2.

In July 2013 we travelled for 2 weeks around Jeju Island, South Korea by bike. Along the journey we went to Udo, or Cow Island, located off the coast of Jeju Island.

We explored the island by foot and came across a charming quiet temple. There we met a monk, haenyeo (female diver) and Butoh dancer.

We interviewed all 3.
#Shibasaki lived in the temple on #Udo Island for over a month to prepare for a performance festival on the Island called "The Soil Station".

After a month staying in the quiet solitude of the barren little island, Shibasaki's advice for visitors is to, "Don't ride a car! Just walk. Every day, every moment the landscape, the light and wind varies from one moment to another."

He says "Please feel the #wind. Great wind blows here and waits for you to come to Udo Island."

This video is part of our film Jeju Island by Bicycle. The film shows our ride around Jeju Island and focuses on the amazing people and places we come across along the way.
