In today's video I'm going to share an activity you can use to help with conjugating verbs in Spanish
In today's video I'm going to give you an activity you can use to help with conjugating verbs in Spanish
And then I'll show you what you should do to learn conjugations more quickly
But with all that said I don't want you to focus on conjugations every single day
Yes they are an important part of mastering the language but first I believe it's very important that every day you have a wide amount of input in Spanish
Listening to a lot of Spanish reading Spanish before you fully commit to this conjugation
But for most students you already have a foundation in Spanish you've heard it a lot and you might even be able to understand something
And now you're starting to speak and want to make sure you're doing it correctly using all the verbs the right way
That's precisely when the conjugation training I'm about to show you will come into play
Now this is how we learn verb conjugation in school and this method is extremely ineffective
Okay so in my first year of Spanish maybe after we'd learned the alphabet and all that
We start learning the present tense conjugations and we spend most of our first year of Spanish I think just on present tense conjugations
Now a year has passed and in the second year we learn the past tense conjugation
We might not even learn the future tense conjugation until the third year
So for many students when they're learning at school it isn't until three years
later that they finally learn how to say I will come here or I will talk to you
We don’t even learn how to say that until three years of Spanish
And it makes it nearly impossible to communicate properly with people when it takes us years to master the verb conjugations
So once again here's how it works: we typically spend the entire semester or several months in a tense state
So let's call this current state the present tense
We're going to take the tense present where we spend all our time learning how to express things in the present tense for each individual verb
So each day we learn how to conjugate this verb how to use this verb—the AR verb the ER verb—in the present tense
And we practiced it for a year
Then next year we return and now we're in the tense preterite the imperfect tense speaking in the past
Then we return next year and we're learning about the tense future and how to talk about things in the future
And then during that year we could tackle the subjunctive and explore all these other moods that exist in Spanish
And it has taken us years to fully understand how to conjugate verbs correctly so we can speak Spanish properly
So what we're going to do is turn this process around in your mind and do the exact opposite of what you've likely been taught in school
And I promise you this will help you learn conjugation much much faster
Well instead of spending years in tension what we'll do is spend a week or two on a verb
Let's take an AR verb for example let's use the verb to dance
Well to dance
This is a regular AR verb
So what we're going to do is take a regular AR verb a regular ER verb and a regular IR verb
Now that you have a basic understanding of conjugation you can do all three by choosing one verb from each
But if you're new to conjugation pick a verb
So let's choose an AR verb
Let's start with the verb bailar
Let's start with a regular AR verb or a regular ER verb or a regular IR verb
Now for the verb bailar
We have
I dance
Dance
You
dance
He she or
you
dance We dance
I dance
Dance And this is your way
You don't need
If you're not going to Spain you don't even need to pay attention to your way
They only use it
in Spain They
don't use it in Latin America or Caribbean
Spanish But I don't want to let
it go And then we have dancing I dance
They dance
The boy dances
The girls dance
You dance in your own way
They dance
Now we know how to say it
I dance
You all dance They dance He she
or you (formal) dances in the
form of you
all We dance
You dance
And then they dance or you dance in your own way
But your form is the one they'll hear from you in Latin America or the Caribbean
Now we know how to say it
I dance
And we examine the rules for this AR verb
What happens with this verb
For example let's take the form for I
I dance
To dance we remove the AR and simply add an O for the first-person form
You dance We
remove the AR and simply add an AS in its place
So you do it through all of these
Once again this is a
regular AR verb When I say regular verb it means all regular conjugations will follow the same pattern
I'll get to that in a moment
But for now let's examine the following tense for this very verb
And now let's look at how to say "to dance" or the verb "I dance" in the present tense instead of the past
So I danced
The preterite
In the tense past I danced
You danced
He she you (formal) danced
We danced
They you all danced
So we have these basic rules and all AR verbs will follow the
same patterns you see here Again we can do this for the next tense
The imperfect tense
And we can do the same for the future tense
Now once we've learned all these rules for this single AR verb
You'll know how to use each regular AR verb So now
if you know how to say I danced or I was dancing
You'll know how to say "I spoke " "I spoke " or "I was speaking "
because the verb hablar follows exactly the same rules as bailar
So when teaching the tense AR verbs go through all the conjugations for each tense at once
Now you can use any regular AR verb
If you practice this daily it will take you a week to truly master these tenses
If you spend just 30 minutes a day learning these
in a week or two you'll know all the AR verb tenses
Now let's say you take another week or two for the AR
And another week or two for the AR
Now in three to six weeks you'll have mastered all the conjugations for regular verbs
And for regular verbs I don't know the exact number but if we go by the basic 80-20 rule
So I'd say that 80% of Spanish verbs are regular
And about 20% maybe even less are irregular
So you now know that 80% of verbs you can conjugate them correctly in any tense
In a few weeks
Now without mentioning it yes you'll need to spend some time learning a few of these irregular verbs
But once you have a general understanding of how all the
conjugation tenses work learning them won't be so difficult
So once again we're going to turn things around in
your mind Instead of spending months learning a tense
We'll spend a month learning all the
tenses at once And
when you do it that way
Focusing remember focus one word at a time
Okay
Focus one word at a time
Now double-check that you're learning an irregular
AR verb an
irregular ER verb and an irregular IR verb
Because when you master these it
will help you learn all the other
conjugations of regular verbs since they are all regular verbs
Because the same exact rules still apply
And this will help you learn conjugations much much faster
