Fourteen Forgotten Wonders of Humanity the Enigmas of History's Greatest Challenges
This world is like a vast stage where the past never truly vanishes—it merely lingers hidden beneath the dust of time
There ancient cities and magnificent structures once amazed humanity then faded into obscurity left to be reclaimed by nature
The dense jungle with its thickets and tangled vegetation has long concealed the ruins shrouding them in quiet mystery for centuries
Some places lie in remote isolated regions their ruins only becoming visible when viewed from above
Each discovery is a missing piece of history waiting to be revealed
And now join Coi Lạ TV on a journey to uncover ancient traces where the past rises up amidst the modern world
Lost Kildas
Deep within a dense humid jungle in Colombia hidden away in a nearly completely isolated region lies a lost city
To reach this archaeological treasure there is no alternative but to hike through the forest for several consecutive days
In 1972 treasure hunters accidentally discovered a series of stone terraces made of stacked stones
That is Kildas Perdida also known as Teuna the lost city of the ancient Tairona
This city was built atop a mountain about 1 300 years ago and once served as home to thousands of people
The entire settlement comprises numerous stone terraces carved directly into the mountainside interconnected by an intricate network of pathways
In Sri Lanka Sigiriya rises dramatically from a massive granite rock standing out vidly amidst a dense lush jungle
This ancient site rises like a witness to the past emerging above the dense jungle that surrounds it
In 1831 the British explorer Jonathan Fogg spotted this forest-covered peak from a distance
It is believed that King Kasapa chose this rock formation as a fortress due to its strategically advantageous location
To reach the summit one must pass over massive stone claws followed by narrow steep staircases
At the mountain's peak the ruins of the ancient palace remain clearly visible
The gardens featuring water features here are considered among the oldest landscape gardens in the world
Number 3 Xiaxi Village
In China deep within the mountains of Xiaxi Village lies one of Asia's least-known mysteries
In 2001 local authorities discovered a massive Buddha face partially concealed by the surrounding forest
This is the largest stone-carved Buddha head in the world
Unlike the well-known Leshan Giant Buddha very little information is known about this statue
The carving appears to have begun directly on the rock face yet after more than a thousand years the work has never been completed
Number 4 Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu Peru is ancient Inca fortress nestled within the majestic Andes mountains
Surrounded by breathtaking scenery this place exudes a mysterious atmosphere often shrouded in thick dense fog
In 1911 American explorer Hiram Bingham led his expedition into the Urubamba Valley
A local farmer named Agustin Lizarraga who had visited the area years earlier showed them the location of the ancient city
Machu Picchu features temples palaces and an irrigation system constructed using extremely sophisticated engineering techniques
However no Inca records document this city leaving its true purpose a major mystery to this day
Machu Picchu is believed to have been abandoned before or during the Spanish conquest of Peru though the exact reason remains unclear
Number 5 Pecha
In Jordan by traversing a narrow canyon one arrives at one of the Middle East's most treasured archaeological gems: Petra
Pecha was once a thriving city and the capital of the Nabataean kingdom ancient Arab people
They adapted to the harsh terrain by constructing sturdy structures directly into the rock cliffs
Despite being located in the desert Pecha once had an advanced system for water management and agriculture
By the 6th century the city had been abandoned and forgotten until it was rediscovered in 1812 by the naval explorer Johan Louis Burkhardt
Number 6 Hegra
In Saudi Arabia after hearing about Pecha the British explorer Sackly Montagu Doughty traveled to a similar location
In 1876 he recorded his journey in a diary titled Traverse in Arab Deserta
That site is Hegra also known as Mada'in Saleh the second-largest city of the Nabataean kingdom after Petra
The surrounding cliffs were carved by ancient people to create grand tombs belonging to individuals from various social classes including military elites
Thanks to isolation and harsh desert conditions these structures have been remarkably well-preserved to this day
Number 7 Nazca drawing
In 1927 Peruvian archaeologist Toribio Mejías stumbled upon the massive geoglyphs while crossing the region
However it's not ruled out that Peruvian pilots may have spotted them from the air earlier though these drawings were created by the ancient Nazca culture
They consist of a vast array of geometric shapes and extended lines spanning an immense area
Some can be seen from the surrounding hills but their full shape only becomes truly apparent when viewed from directly above
One of the most accurate depictions is the bird of prey
However despite being called a potoo many researchers believe it may actually represent a different local bird species possibly the Andean Kenken a native bird of this region
The spider figure with its elongated legs demonstrates the ancient people's remarkably precise grasp of proportion on an enormous scale
The spiral shape features a simple yet mysterious design reminiscent of the patterns found in lost cities deep within the Amazon rainforest which we'll discuss shortly
For many the most mysterious drawing is the figure known as the astronaut—a humanoid with an unusually large head as if gazing up at the sky
Number 8 Pampa Disaster
Not far from the Nazca region lies the Pampa geoglyphs also in Peru These drawings were first observed by Giulio C Tello in 1926
Though not as famous as the Nazca Lines they are no less captivating
Some geoglyphs belong to the Nazca culture but most were created by earlier ancient cultures such as the Paracas and Topara
Unlike Nazca the Pampa drawings are typically carved into hillside slopes
Some simulations depict animals while others portray humans or mythical creatures
On the western flank near the coast the massive Paracas Candelabra stands out prominently most clearly visible from offshore
The purpose behind this drawing remains unknown One theory suggests it may have once served as a navigational marker for ancient sailors
Number 9 The city of Cotico
In Guatemala the ancient city of Tico once flourished around 1 500 years ago
It once stood as one of the most powerful political economic and military centers of the Maya civilization
The city lies deep within the Maya Biosphere Reserve the largest natural protected area in Guatemala
Due to its remote location the ruins of Tico remained inaccessible and unexplored by local leaders until 1848
The earliest photographs taken in 1882 show Tico still heavily shrouded in dense jungle
Amidst the squares the Acropolis and the grand pyramids the city boasts thousands of architectural wonders
Temples stood atop many pyramids where religious ceremonies were once held
Despite its grandeur Tico was ultimately abandoned nearly 1 100 years ago as Maya society collapsed
Number 10 Göbekli Tepe
In Turkey Gobekli Tepe is regarded as one of the most significant and mysterious discoveries in modern archaeology
This pioneering site was discovered in 1963 but serious excavations led by archaeologist Klaus Schmitt did not begin until 1995
Göbekli Tepe is one of the oldest known stone architectural complexes dating back around 12 000 years predating even the Egyptian pyramids
This era has completely challenged traditional hypotheses about human history
According to older perspectives people of that era were merely hunter-gatherer groups lacking the capability to construct complex structures
Yet the massive stone pillars and intricate carvings precisely reveal that the builders possessed construction skills far beyond mere speculation
The animal carvings rich in symbolic meaning remain partially undeciphered to this day
For reasons that remain unclear the entire sacred site was deliberately buried inadvertently preserving it nearly intact until its rediscovery
Also in Turkey Karahan T E P was discovered in 1997 just a short distance from Gobekli T
This site was built by foraging communities long before humans knew pottery or settled agriculture
Karahan Tepe has a foundation dating back between 11 000 and 13 000 years and may be one of the oldest known settlements ever discovered
The massive stone pillars reveal the involvement of specialized craftsmen
The carved panels and sculptures found here are believed to be linked to religious rituals that have been entirely lost to time
When it comes to lost cities hidden in the Amazon rainforest archaeology has only just begun to scratch the surface
The dense impenetrable jungle made access extremely difficult while the thick canopy overhead rendered aerial observation nearly impossible
However in the western Amazon region within Ecuador's Upano Valley one of the most shocking discoveries was announced in 2024
A research team led by archaeologist Stephen Rothstein has uncovered evidence of a series of ancient cities
These settlements were inhabited from around 2 500 years ago until 1 500 years ago
Hundreds of similar structures remain buried beneath the vegetation indicating the potential existence of many undiscovered archaeological wonders
The existing evidence indicates that these are cities belonging to the Upano culture
The exact purpose of these structures remains unclear some theories suggest they may have been places where women gave birth
Most astonishingly other carvings were discovered scattered throughout this region of the Amazon
It is believed that the eruption of a volcano located within the Amazon basin may have triggered the collapse of this civilization
That volcano has been active for centuries and is renowned for its ferocity etched deeply in the memory of Ecuador's indigenous communities
Sudden abandonment of settlements may have been caused by violent eruptions or by a series of repeated smaller eruptions
In Cambodia the temples of the Khmer empire long swallowed by jungle for centuries have been rediscovered
Most notable is Angkor Wat brought to light by explorer Henry Mouhot in 1860
It is one of the largest religious structures in the world
Originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu Angkor Wat gradually transitioned into a Buddhist temple
In some other temples within the Angkor complex jungle is gradually reclaiming its space
The massive ancient trees such as banyans and silk cotton trees growing amidst the ruins create a strange harmony between architecture and nature
Nearby is the Bayon temple the final sacred structure completed at Angkor
Hundreds of stone faces with enigmatic smiles gaze down from the temple towers leaving every visitor awestruck
These faces may represent Buddhist deities or could depict King Jayavarman VII
Number 14 Saksayhuamá
Saksayhuaman in Peru is the most striking testament to the immense scale and advanced engineering skill of Inca architecture
This structure may have once served as a temple dedicated to the sun god or possibly as a military fortress
Spanish historian Pedro Sancho Zelahat-Orez was the first to describe Saksayhuaman after arriving in Cusco in 1533
What amazes people the most is the Inca's construction technique
The walls were constructed from massive stone blocks each weighing tens of tons
Each stone block was meticulously carved with extreme precision fitting together perfectly without any need for mortar
It is believed that the stones were initially shaped at the quarries before being finished on the construction site
And thus the journey through humanity's lost cities comes to a temporary close right here
But the mysteries of the past never truly have an end
Below the spreading canopy of forests at the tip of deserts or deep within remote mountain ranges
There are still countless traces waiting to be discovered deciphered and told
