Succulents That Are Difficult To Grow

Succulents are generally known for being easy to care for, but some species, especially rare or collector's items, present a greater challenge due to very specific cultivation needs.

The most difficult species generally require precise environmental conditions and are less tolerant of common mistakes such as overwatering or inadequate lighting.

Overwatering: The most common mistake in succulent care, which can be fatal for more sensitive species, as it rots the roots. They store water in their leaves and stems and prefer the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

Inadequate substrate: Common garden soils retain too much moisture. Ideally, a substrate specifically for cacti and succulents should be used, which is porous and ensures excellent drainage.

Incorrect light: Although most need abundant sunlight, some rare varieties have specific needs for direct or filtered light that, if not met, can lead to disease or etiolation (weak and elongated growth).

Seasonal dormancy: Some succulents have dormancy periods in winter or summer, requiring a drastic change in watering routine and sun exposure, which can confuse less experienced growers.

For success with more demanding succulents, it is crucial to research the specific needs of each species and ensure a controlled environment, generally with good ventilation and pots with drainage holes.
