How to become a better runner?
It doesn't matter whether you're a musician or a machine gunner.
In the army, we need a minimum level of fitness.
Some of us don't stop there though.
We've got soldiers competing in races all over the world.
So who better to tell you how to become a better runner?
Tip one.
Strengthen your core.
The more tired you get, the worse your posture, the less efficient your run.
You don't need a gym.
Crunches, leg raises and planking.
They'll get the job done fine.
Tip two.
Strengthen your ankles.
When the terrain is tough, your ankles need to be tougher.
One way to do it?
Imagine you've got a pen on your big toe.
Then spell out the alphabet.
Then strengthening your ankles becomes as easy as ABC.
Tip three.
Set goals.
Running is like anything.
You get out what you put in.
If you have a target, you have something to work towards.
And that can help you focus while you run.
Tip four.
Do interval training.
Over a long run, your heart is going to pound, pound, pound.
That's normal.
Prepare for it by running short, speedy intervals that get your heart pumping.
Then recover.
Then repeat.
Tip five.
Help yourself stay injury free.
Regular training is the key to success.
That's hard to do when you're injured.
Some injuries are unavoidable.
But if you always warm up, warm down and stretch, you can avoid the avoidable injuries.
And keep putting in the miles.
And that's how to become a better runner.
