Gustav Klimt's portrait "The Woman in Gold" used to be the most expensive painting on the art market at $135 million. During the Nazi regime, the picture was confiscated and only delivered to heirs in the USA in 2006. A team of art historians, museum curators and agents reconstructs the journey of the portrait and in the process also sheds light on the fate of the artist.

Update Nov 19th, 2025: Klimt’s portrait of Elisabeth Lederer was sold for $236.4m (£179m) in New York, making it to date the second most expensive piece ever sold at auction. The Portrait was painted between 1914 and 1916.
