Getting Rid Of Absolute Space: You've Been Inertial Framed!
Motion, Episode 2
First episode here: https://youtu.be/hDi-mZeIUi4
We looked at Newton's First Law, and realised that its formulation hides some subtle issues. Relative to what do force-free bodies move in straight lines with uniform velocity? Newton postulated the existence of absolute space, a fixed background of points in space with respect to which all true motion is measured.
But this absolute space is invisible, undetectable, and in many ways unphysical. Perhaps it's something we should consider getting rid of? It turns out we don't need absolute space for Newton's Laws to work. By replacing absolute space with inertial reference frames, we solve the problems caused by absolute space.
Watch the video to learn what inertial frames are, and why physics is written in terms of them. Understanding inertial frames will lead us to a deep understanding of Einstein's Relativity in future episodes.
