The Department of Agriculture has overhauled the traditional food pyramid, making major changes to the dietary guidelines followed by millions of Americans.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kenney Jr. said protein and healthy fats are essential, and were wrongly discouraged in earlier dietary guidelines.

Instead, he said the federal government has declared war on added sugar, calling it one of the factors driving metabolic disease.

An illustration released on Jan. 7 encourages consumers to eat more protein, dairy, vegetables, and fruits. Whole grains like wheat would make up a smaller but still important portion of the diet. The difference with the previous food pyramid is in the balance.
