I was working in Laois during the summer and I passed through the townland of Clopook. There I drove by an old Medieval church with a graveyard.
I parked on the roadside by the entrance and explored the remains of the structure and its quiet graveyard. This video was made from the few minutes I spent at the church grounds.
In County Leash in the townland of Clopoak stands the remains of Clopoak Medieval Church.
The church and adjoining graveyard is in a rural area on high ground surrounded by pasture land.
Access to the site is from the roadside through a gate and a stile. The graveyard contains 18th
to 20th century headstones in mostly good conditions. A number are leaning worn or
illegible yet many other inscriptions can be clearly read. Between 15 to 20 percent of memorials
are table or slab tombs dating from the 18th century. The earliest memorial is dated
1706 and is situated within the church ruins. Local groups actively maintain the site and
promote its history with guided tours and volunteer efforts preserving its heritage
for future generations. If you are interested in hearing further about the preservation efforts
and promotion of Clopoak Medieval Church and similar sites in County Leash
