Can you have work-life balance as a doctor?

Are you struggling to find work-life balance as a doctor? Or perhaps you don't think it's possible, because other doctors have told you that. This was the problem that I spoke to a fellow doctor about on a coaching call recently. As a doctor, it's important to know how to balance your work life and your personal life. I see so many people in healthcare - from medical students to doctors and nurses - who don't have this work-life balance at all. In fact, it can be easy to become disillusioned in medicine and think that it's not possible at at. So many doctors don't have a life outside of work. No hobbies, no time with friends and family, no time to themselves, so they don't think work-life balance is possible whilst being a doctor.

So many doctors I speak to in coaching are asking the question 'should I quit my job as a doctor?' It takes years to train to be a doctor and it's sad to think that so many healthcare workers are quitting because of burnout and not achieving work life balance.

Healthcare workers in the NHS and across the world are seeing high rates of burnout. We work hard, we work long hours and we need to take good care of ourselves at work and outside of work through good self-care, having hobbies, time to relax and time with friends and family. Achieving work-life balance as a doctor has never been more important.

Achieving work-life balance is important not just for our own happiness and mental health, but also for our patients. Our jobs are so important, and we need to be able to show up to work feeling energised and well. If we can do this, it has ripple effects onto the team and our patients.
