Forgotten Temples in the Himalayas
High in the Himalayas lies the former Kingdom of Mustang. This remote region is home to centuries‑old monasteries and temples — the bedrock of a unique Tibetan culture on Nepalese soil.
But the harsh climate has taken a heavy toll on these sacred sites and the unique culture they sustain. Only the restoration of the monasteries in recent years has sparked a cultural renaissance.
Italian master conservator Luigi Fieni and his friend Tsewang Bista, nephew of Mustang’s last king, embark on a four‑week journey across the former kingdom in northern Nepal. They are united by a common mission—to preserve Mustang’s culture for future generations.
Time, however, is running out. Without large‑scale revival, these ancient monasteries will continue to crumble. And a resurgence of Buddhism would not please everyone in the neighborhood — above all, neighboring China. It has other priorities and seeks to prevent Mustang from serving as a refuge for Tibetan exiles.
