For more than 500 years, The Battle of Anghiari has been considered one of the greatest lost works in art history.
Commissioned for the heart of Florentine power to commemorate the legendary Battle of Anghiari, Leonardo da Vinci’s mural was praised by contemporaries — but has not been seen since the early 1500s.
In this first episode of Painted Veil, we begin the investigation. Set against the political intrigue of Renaissance Florence, this episode explores Leonardo’s commission for the Palazzo Vecchio and how it placed him in direct competition with Michelangelo.
Drawing on historical accounts, surviving sketches, later copies, and the writings of Giorgio Vasari, we uncover what is known — and what remains tantalisingly unresolved.
But this is only the beginning.
In Part 2, we follow the clues left behind — including a cryptic message hidden on the walls of the Palazzo Vecchio — and ask the question that has obsessed historians for decades:
Is Leonardo’s lost masterpiece still there?
