The Worlds Oldest Lighthouse - Hook Head, Ireland

Hook Head Lighthouse is widely recognised as the oldest operational lighthouse in the world. It stands at the tip of the Hook Peninsula in County Wexford, Ireland, where it has been guiding ships for over 800 years. The current tower was built around the year 1201 under the orders of William Marshal, the Anglo-Norman Earl of Pembroke. Marshal had encouraged the construction of a beacon to aid navigation into the port of Waterford, which was a key medieval trading hub. The lighthouse was manned and maintained by monks from a nearby monastery who lived on site and kept a fire burning on the tower’s roof to warn ships of the dangerous rocks below.
The structure itself is built of local limestone and stands approximately 35 metres (115 feet) tall. Its walls are up to 4 metres thick at the base, narrowing slightly toward the top. The original beacon was a coal fire, maintained manually by the monks, but over the centuries the lighthouse was gradually modernised. Oil lamps were introduced, followed by gas and later electricity. Today, the light is fully automated and operated by the Commissioners of Irish Lights, the body responsible for navigational aids around the Irish coast.
Despite its upgrades, much of the original 13th-century structure remains intact, making Hook Head an extraordinary example of medieval maritime engineering still performing its original function. It continues to serve as a working lighthouse, helping vessels navigate the southeastern coast of Ireland where the Celtic Sea meets the Atlantic.
Hook Head is also a part of Ireland’s Ancient East heritage trail and is open to the public for guided tours. The site includes a visitor centre and offers panoramic views of the surrounding sea cliffs, which are popular for walking and birdwatching. While the location has become a well-known tourist destination, the lighthouse remains first and foremost a maritime safety structure — a role it has fulfilled without interruption for more than eight centuries
