Jannik Sinner went to the NextGen ATP Finals as a fan & a 17-year-old in 2018. One year later, he was the champion. Now, he's in the world's Top 10. This is the story of how Jannik Sinner arrived on the scene to stun the field in Milan.
Welcome to the next Gen ATP Finals.
See the future.
We gotta end on something higher though.
Welcome to the next Gen ATP Finals.
See the future!
Yeah, exactly. I've been there to see what's happening a little bit,
to see some matches and obviously I told myself it would be very nice to play one time here.
And I think, you know, the next year, 2019, I was able to play.
Just maybe one and a half months around.
Before that, I knew I had wild cards.
I've made some couple of great results, you know,
winning my first Challenger, then after a couple of ITFs,
then after, you know, in Rome, I won one round.
So I think it was great.
I remember before Milan, I was playing in Antwerp.
I made a semi-final there, I made a very good run there,
you know, beating Mo Fils, Thiafo, you know,
knowing that he was playing also in Milan, which gave me confidence.
So, you know, obviously I was very happy and to be honest,
I felt quite ready, you know, to compete there.
And, you know, playing at home, you know, with the crowd is always very, very nice.
And is this set to be a very special week on home soil?
He is feeling the love here.
See the future!
The more I played, the better I felt on court.
And, you know, starting from a very, very good first round,
I think we both played well, me and Francis.
It might just be the match that a large majority inside this stadium
were looking forward to most today.
That will seal it.
Yannick Sinner, the big winner on night one in Milan.
No wonder there is a lot of hype about this young talent.
Which gave me a lot of confidence.
Then after, I was playing very, very great against Imer as well.
So I was already qualified for the semi-final.
What a performance over the first two days here in Milan.
And here are the two contenders.
Wow! What do you call that shot?
Yannick Sinner is now just a set away from the final
for becoming the first Italian champion in next-gen ATP Finals history.
You know, I felt, yeah, comfortable that week.
And obviously I was not thinking about,
OK, I'm going to win that.
I'm just going to focus about the present.
I was always hitting the ball very clean that week.
You know, also in practice sessions, OK, I lost,
but I was feeling the ball quite well.
It was very nice and obviously,
you know, this trophy is to share with all the people, I think.
Obviously, trying to enjoy every moment which I've done
and I try always to do on court
and, yeah, I think at the end it was a very good week.
