Japanese Mark New Year With Prayers for Health and Happiness at Tokyo Shrine
Thousands descended upon Tokyo's iconic Meiji Shrine early on Jan. 1 to offer prayers for the New Year of 2026.
New Year is a major holiday in Japan, with large numbers of people visiting the country's shrines to offer coins in hopes of having their wishes granted.
The shrine is dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken. The two are honored and remembered for modernizing Japan, allowing it to emerge as a major global power within just a few decades.
