The United States kicked off a six-night light show at the capital's Washington Monument on Dec. 31 that will mark the United States' origins in 1776, as the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

A countdown timer was projected onto the monument as Washington ushered in the New Year with a fireworks display.

The light show will project key events in U.S. history on the Washington Monument, including the discovery of the continent, the U.S. War of Independence from Britain, the Industrial Revolution, and important events from the 20th century.

The installation is set to last from Dec. 31 to Jan. 5, and is free and open to the public at the National Mall.
