Jonas Brothers Surprise Juvenile Diabetes Camp With Kelly Clarkson!

Well, I hear that you're Jonas Brothers fans, right? We are. Yeah, absolutely. Who isn't? Well, wait, I have a huge surprise because they're here, so we wanted them to say hi. Hi, guys. How are you guys doing? We have had such a great time with Joe, Kevin, and Nick this hour. Thank y'all so much for being here. But as many of you know, Nick is type one diabetic. The band supports many causes related to pediatric diabetes. In my home state of Texas, thousands of kiddos gather every summer at Camp Sweeney, the largest summer camp in the world for children with type one diabetes. We have Dr. Ernie, the camp director, dialed in, along with campers Riley and Wynn, who all watch on NBC5, Dallas, Fort Worth. Shout out, Fort Worth. They have no idea Joe, Nick, and Kevin are here, so don't read it. Okay, let's not give it away. Here we go. Hi, y'all. It's great to meet all of you. Thank you for joining us. Hi, how are you? How are you? So good, actually. I'm having a great day. I hope you are as well. But Dr. Ernie, I'm gonna start with you. How long has the camp supported children with diabetes? Well, first of all, Kelly, thank you so much for having us on the show. It's quite an honor. Camp Sweeney's been around since 1950, and it's been serving children from all over the world and all over the country for all those years. We've had over 35,000 children attend. It is sort of a little piece of heaven on earth. You know, when a child is first diagnosed with diabetes, you know, they're just living their lives. They're trying to make the soccer team, trying to make the choir, trying to play lacrosse, just have a sleepover. And suddenly they get diagnosed and everything changes. You know, they're on insulin pumps. They're having to deal with blood sugars all the time. And there's so many things that burden their lives. But for 18 short days, they escaped to Camp Sweeney, and they immersed themselves with 250 other kids from all over the country. And suddenly the diabetes disappears. They can just be kids having a ball, just having a great time, playing any sport they want, doing whatever they want, learning what's important in their lives and building the confidence so when they go home, they can just kill it in their normal lives. That's incredible, man. Well, Riley and Nguyen, how long have y'all been each going to the camp? I've been going to Camp Sweeney for four years now. I was diagnosed at the age of 11 in 2019. And I was the only diabetic in my middle school, so I felt very alone. But going to Camp Sweeney, it just made me feel like I was normal. And I got to meet so many kids like me, and it was just life-changing. Absolutely. And girl, those cheekbones, come on now. Hey, those are nice. What about you, Nguyen? I've been going to camp for eight years. I was diagnosed at 17 months old. Camp Sweeney has had a very profound impact on my life. It has shown me diabetics, you know what I'm going through, especially the mentor program. When I've had a mentor, them being able to give me advice and to soon be being a mentor and give younger diabetics advice. Yeah, absolutely. Well, I hear that you're Jonas Brothers fans, right? We are. Yeah, absolutely. Who isn't? Well, wait, I have a huge surprise because they're here. So we wanted them to say hi. Every time we camp, we always have been, that's so exciting. Yeah, I know. As a fellow diabetic, it's really nice to meet you guys. Hi. This face was my favorite. He was like. Dr. Ernie, thanks for all the work you do. It means a lot. I've been type one diabetic for almost 20 years, and I didn't have anybody around me in my life that I got to spend time with who was living with the disease, but I had an amazing support system, and that's what it's all about. And what you've created there and what you're working on there has obviously had a huge impact on both Riley and Wynn's lives, but on all the 35,000 plus kids' lives that have gone to Camp Sweeney. So great work, and nice to meet you guys. Thank you. You know, you have always been such a role model to so many of the kids. They all write you. Everybody from camp's always sending stuff to you, and we are so appreciative of how you live your life and inspire kids. Yeah. Well, thank you.
