Founded by the ancestor to Clan Murray, William de Moravia, Bothwell was built in the time of the Scottish Wars of Independence. Edward I of England captured the castle in the great siege of 1301 and the castle became an English garrison until Edward III defeat at the Battle of Bannockburn by the Scottish army under King Robert the Bruce.
The Castle came to Douglas hands when Archibald ‘the Grim’ (son of ‘the Black’) Douglas married into the Murray family. Much of the castle seen today was built by Douglas.
