Our next guest is a gifted actress in Human Ray of Sunshine, who we can see next in Outer Space.
Her new movie is Predator Badlands.
How was Halloween? I know you love dressing up for Halloween, right?
I do. Halloween is like my favorite holiday.
It is, number one.
It really is. But this year I didn't get to dress up.
Why?
I was flying back from Berlin, I was filming there, and I got in so late, so I didn't get to dress up.
But I have a house now that I'm renting, so I do rent a home, and I put candy out for the first time for the kids.
And did they behave themselves?
They did not.
No! I was peeking through the window, and I saw kids dumping it.
People were coming back and double-dipping.
I'm like, you already took a piece, but...
Yeah, this is a big problem. It's a scourge of...
But we had a kid, I don't know if you saw in the beginning of the show, who came back and filled up the empty bowl with his own candy.
Which probably only happened one time in the whole world last night.
I agree.
The first time I think you were on this show, you were 12 years old. You were actually still trick-or-treating age.
Definitely trick-or-treating.
Obviously you were living with your family at the time.
You said you're renting. Are you finally alone?
Because I think I ask you every time who you live with, and each time it's an assortment of individuals.
Yeah, it sounds like I'm crazy, just going from one place to the next.
Yes, no, I am. I have a house here that I'm renting.
Yeah, a lot of appliances and things.
That's good. It's good you want that.
Yeah.
Places to sit. What appliances do you have?
I think it's called a couch.
Well, I have this really fancy coffee machine that when you're online and looking at all the gadgets and gizmos, you're like,
yeah, I want this. This one makes everything. I'm like, I want that.
But it comes, and you're like, I literally can't work it.
Oh, you can't.
It's just been sitting there.
You don't know how to work it.
No, well, the instructions are like, it's like 50 pages long.
Yeah, right.
What? You know.
Do you know how to work the television? Were you able to see the Dodgers game?
I know how to work the TV.
Well, I was actually at an event. It was a LACMA event, a Gucci LACMA event that they throw.
Oh, on Saturday.
Yeah, during the game, which my mom is such a huge sports fan, so she was like, why would anyone hold anything during the World Series, you know?
Which I kind of understand, because everyone was just like looking at their phone.
Oh, they were even at that Gucci event, huh?
They were. I mean, there were some, you know, like Italian designers, and they didn't know what was going on.
Because people would be cheering, and people would be like, oh no, now they're tied up.
And they would be like, what is happening?
What about my suit?
Yeah, exactly.
Right.
Exactly.
We got a photograph, I believe, of you throwing out the first pitch at the Dodgers game.
Yeah.
And why did they say CC 50 Cent on this?
Oh my gosh, this is so good. This is one of my proudest moments.
Because I was 16. I think I was promoting Maleficent or something, and they asked me to go and throw out the first pitch, which was huge for my sports family.
Oh.
So I got out there, and they just see me with my long blonde hair. I'm like skipping to the mound.
And the people told me, oh, you don't have to throw from the mound, because it's such a long way.
Like, you can go halfway.
Right, yeah.
And my family was like, no. Like, that is an embarrassment. Like, you must throw from the mound.
Like, we would not have any daughter of mine.
And so I did.
You did.
And I nailed it.
What do you mean you nailed it?
Was it a strike?
It was a strike. It was right down the middle.
Wow.
Right to the pitcher. Like, it was so exciting.
Oh, so they were making fun of 50 Cent's terrible pitch.
I see.
Because the week before, he had thrown, like, a crazy one.
Yeah.
Yeah, so he's like, I guess maybe I'm his arch nemesis.
Are you aware that your last name means striking somebody out?
Fanning.
Oh, oh.
The batter.
That's right.
You were born to do that.
Yeah, I was born to do this.
So this, Predator Badlands, some of the gang here at the show went to see it, and they loved this movie.
This is like a, it's in the Predator universe, but not specifically.
Tell me how it fits in.
Yes, so Dan Trachtenberg is the brilliant director, and he, this film is kind of a standalone film.
It's really unprecedented in the franchise, because it's the first time the Predator is the protagonist.
So you get to learn about his backstory, and it's also a bit of a mashup with the Alien universe,
because I play a Weyland-Yutani synth from the Alien world.
Yes, and I'm broken.
So I, when he finds me, I'm actually, I'm cut in half.
I'm a robot.
Here's a photograph of you being carried around like a backpack.
Yes, I am a human labubu.
Now, where are, where are your legs here?
Well, technically, when you're seeing this, because we did this practically.
We were fully hooked up together the entire time.
Yes.
He had to carry you around all over.
He did.
And, I mean, we were in harnesses and had wire work.
We filmed in New Zealand, but, like, we were hooked up to trees,
and my legs were in blue stockings hanging out right about here.
Oh.
And kind of dangling in a sling.
So then they, they used the blue screen to get rid of them?
Yes, and we would fly through the air attached.
Oh, wow.
You know, if we needed a snack, we had to go together.
Really?
Wow.
Was that fun or terrible?
I love Demetrius.
He's incredible, who plays the Predator.
And so we got very close.
I mean, as you have to.
Back to back, literally.
Literally back to back.
He had my back, but, yeah, at times, you're like, you know,
I might need to, like, use the bathroom.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It's like, well, he's looking the other way.
I guess it's, yeah.
Yeah, true, true.
And you have another film that's in theaters right now called
Sentimental Value, and I was reading about this movie,
because it got, like, a 19-minute standing ovation or something
at, at Conna, as they say.
Yes, yes, the famous Conna.
That's, correct me if I'm wrong, that's too many minutes, right?
19 minutes is like, at, like, 11 minutes, you're like,
okay, everybody, sit down.
Yeah, you really start to blush at that point.
I mean, obviously, it was amazing to have that response
and everything, but, you know, the camera is in your face,
like, while everyone's clapping, and after a while, you're like.
Yeah, yeah, like, yeah, thank you.
Hey, thanks.
Yeah, yeah, and you're, like, just getting bright red.
Yeah.
But it's still cool.
I want to know who the guy is who, like, times it, you know?
Who is that person?
It's a very, you know what, they take that very seriously there,
yeah, whoever, it's probably a professional of some kind.
And I've seen you and your castmates and the various people
who made the movie are on, like, the Oscar nomination
possibility list, so congratulations on that.
You pitch, you have no legs, and you.
And I hand out candy.
And you hand out candy.
Predator Badlands opens in theaters everywhere on Friday,
and Sentimental Value is in select theaters this Friday.
Elle Fanning, everybody, thank you.
I'll be back with more.
