Demi Lovato On Creating ‘It’s Not That Deep,’ Camp Rock 3, The Best Part Of Being Married & More!
Joe just recently went on a Hot Ones episode,
seemingly confirmed.
Oh, I saw.
They're doing Camp Rock 3.
What are your thoughts on that?
What was your reaction to that?
I was like, ooh.
Was he allowed to say that?
What's up, friends?
It's your girl, Emily Kerl,
back here in our iHeartRadio studio in New York City,
and today we're joined by one of our all-time favorites.
She is here, she is back, Demi Lovato, everyone!
Can we give it up for Demi in our studio?
Woo!
Thank you.
We are so excited to have you here,
and what an amazing year that you had.
I can't wait to celebrate.
First off, I love the word matching.
I know, twinsies!
An amazing year that you've had.
You married the love of your life.
You're releasing new music, and then you announced
you have a new album.
Your ninth studio album, It's Not That Deep,
is almost here.
Congratulations.
Thank you so much.
Tell me about this last year for you.
What an amazing chapter.
This last year has been so amazing,
and so fulfilling for me.
Like you said, I got to marry the love of my life.
I have been making new music.
I am putting out new music,
and it's just been a really fulfilling year for me.
Can I just say, as a fan of yours for so long,
I mean, I feel like the confidence, the joy,
the freedom that you're exuding in these two singles
that we have, I feel like is this little peek
into this new project, which you said
sort of represents this perfect reflection
of where you are in your life right now.
Tell us about that.
I wanted this album to reflect where I'm at
in my life, with not only the subject matter,
but the sounds, and I feel like this album
really embodies and encapsulates where I'm at.
I'm feeling super confident.
I'm super happy.
I'm feeling joyous and free, and I'm having fun,
and that's the most important thing about it,
and I wanted that to be reflected
with the music I'm making.
I also love that your producer, Zone, he said that.
He was like, we had so much fun in the studio.
So much fun.
Which paint the picture for me,
what was it like working together,
and how did this album process differ
from other albums that you've done in the past?
A little backstory on this album.
I had originally gone into writing this project.
I thought I was gonna do a rock album again,
and when I started writing it, I was like,
I just don't resonate with anything
that I'm writing right now, because there's only
so many happy rock songs you can make,
and I'm in such a great place that I didn't wanna write
from an emotional point of view anymore,
or at least for this project,
and I remember Kesha actually was the person
who told me I should work with Zone,
and they worked together.
He did Joyride for her, amongst other songs,
but at the time, it was Joyride
that really piqued my interest,
and she was like, you should work with Zone,
so Zone and I got into the studio,
and he's such a genius.
He's so talented.
He came in the very first day
that we started working together.
He came in, he was like, I just made this track
in the Uber on the way here,
and I was like.
Casual.
Casual, like, what?
Yeah.
And it was so fire.
It ended up setting the tone for the rest of the project,
and we just had so much fun working together.
He's so funny.
We laugh constantly when we're in the studio,
and I think that was also reflective of the music we made.
You know, having so much fun working together,
we made fun songs together, too.
So what was that first track that he made in the Uber
that sort of kicked off the project?
Can you tell us what that was?
Yeah, it's a song called Frequency.
Frequency, okay.
And what about that one did you know
that was, like, tonally where you wanted to go?
I had been trying on different sounds
and different genres of music,
trying to figure out what lane I wanted to go in
for this next project,
and when he played me the track for Frequency,
and then we ended up writing to it.
We wrote Frequency, and I was super stoked with it,
and was like, wait, we're on to something.
And we just continued to work together
and make more songs like Frequency,
and that's how the album shaped up.
It's so fun, because last night,
I think was the first time, maybe,
that you had teased this song.
Yes.
And everyone was going nuts online about this song.
Thank you.
How much fun is that for you
to get to play these little snippets for the first time
and see how a crowd responds and reacts?
It's so much fun.
It's so much fun because I've been holding on
to this song for over a year now,
and to be able to have my fans hear it
and be excited about it, it's just, it's really fulfilling.
And the album cover is just so stunning
and fun and stimulating.
I love the entire process,
and you said this is the album cover of your dreams.
Walk me through those creative conversations that you had
where you landed on this concept for the album cover.
I have an amazing team.
My creative director, Imogene, is just so brilliant,
and also the photographer that shot the album cover,
Daniel Satchin, he's so talented.
And collectively, we all came up with the concept,
and we just, we shot it.
And the thing about the album cover is,
it's very symbolic of my life.
I am on full display 24-7.
It's no secret that I live my life very publicly,
and there's a ton of chaos surrounding me,
but I'm unbothered by it.
And I wanted to capture that on the album cover.
So you have me standing in front of all this chaos,
and I'm not paying attention to any of it.
Another part about it is I'm holding a dry cleaning bag
that says We Heart Our Customers,
and I want my fans to know that that was symbolic
for this album is for my fans.
We Heart Our Customers, We Heart Our Lovotics.
And so this album is for my fans.
And then lastly, if there's one thing about me and a camera
is I will lock the **** in.
And so that's exactly what I'm doing in that picture.
And we're so excited to see you in this new era.
And visually, let's talk about the album for Here All Night.
You reunited with Hannah Lyx Davis,
who's behind so many iconic Demi visuals,
which we know, cool for the summer, sorry, not sorry.
What made now the right time to reunite
with this longtime collaborator?
I love working with Hannah,
and I knew that there was no one better to make this video.
She does a really, really incredible job
of capturing what the song is about
and putting it into a video.
And then also, she just makes you look really good.
Yeah, you look so good.
I mean, what an amazing video to drop, yeah.
Thank you, and so I trust her wholeheartedly
with the work that we do together.
And I also just ******* adore her as a person.
She's so sweet and so talented.
I also love the choreography, too.
I feel like it's been a minute
since we've seen you do something like that.
Tell me about getting back into that energy of dancing
and dancing for the music video.
Yeah, I mean, I have so much fun dancing.
I love taking dance lessons,
even when I don't have anything to dance for.
Just getting back into the dance studio
and working on this song was really fun
and exciting for me, and I had a really great time.
You and Hannah Luxavis, iconic collaborators
and other dynamic duo, you and Juths, your husband,
you got married this past week.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Does it feel like normal now to say your husband?
Like has it already, so now you're like already in the zone.
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
It was so natural.
As soon as we got married, I was calling him my husband
and it just rolled off the tongue.
The wedding was so beautiful.
Thank you.
When you think back to that day,
what is like the most memorable things that come to mind?
What do you remember most?
Well, I remember, first of all, our vows.
Reading each other our vows was really special
and we kind of said some of the same things,
which was really cute.
Like we did this thing in our vows
where it was like honorable mentions.
Like I listed everything that I loved about him
and then I was like, okay, honorable mentions.
Like I also love this and this and this.
And he did the same thing in his vows,
which was really cute.
And then I also remember our first dance.
It was so beautiful.
John Resnick from the Goo Goo Dolls performed Iris for us.
And I'll never forget how special that moment was.
It was so beautiful.
You shared so much of your life with us
and I know we're so excited to see you
get this love that you deserve.
What has this love taught you about yourself
in this time in your life?
Oh my God, that's a really good question.
I think that in order to find the love that I deserved,
I had to learn how to love myself first.
And I think the universe really rewards you
when you do the work on yourself
and when you're putting yourself first,
that's when the universe provides.
As soon as I started taking care of myself
and just learning to love myself,
as soon as I did that, Jordan came into the picture.
He came into the picture
and it was right from the very beginning.
Yeah.
Was it always something that you thought
that you would marry another creative?
How important was that for you
and how does that bounce off you guys
both being artists and musicians?
I had never really thought about the type of person
I wanted to marry being a creative or not,
but I'm so glad that I did marry a creative
because he understands me so much.
There's days when I go to the studio
and I have a bad day and he's like,
you know what, sometimes as an artist,
you have bad days in the studio
and you'll figure it out tomorrow
or you'll get another one soon enough.
And it's helpful to have his support in that way.
What does he think of the new album?
Does he already have his favorites?
He loves it.
Does he?
Yes, yes he does, he loves it.
We're so excited to hear it
and I can't wait to hear his favorites as well.
I also, we have to talk about,
you said you made a lot of this album
with the girls and the gays in mind.
Yeah.
Tell me what has the queer community meant to you
throughout your journey
and how much they've supported you.
I'm a part of it.
And so I obviously resonate so deeply with my queer fans.
They just mean everything to me and they know what's up.
Like if you, if the queer community loves you,
you're doing something right.
Yeah.
So having their support means everything to me.
Also the girls, yeah, like, yeah.
I mean, yeah, you feel it in the music.
It is just so fun.
It's an instant, like it brings you,
it's that perfect bangers.
It's the pop, it's what we need.
It's that high energy.
Yeah, definitely.
I also have to talk about seeing you on stage
with the Jonas Brothers,
which I feel like collectively,
everyone was freaking out when this moment happened.
Tell me a little bit about what it was like for you,
not only to be reunited on, you know,
with the Jonas Brothers singing, you know,
some old camp rock, nostalgic hits,
but for you to come off the stage
and see how everyone responded and reacted to that.
How much was that for you to see?
It was so much fun.
We had such a great time
and I hadn't performed those songs in like 15 years
or something.
Like, was it muscle memory?
Did you like already, like-
No, I had to relearn the song.
Because I was like,
it's been 15 years since I've done this on stage.
I need to like relearn it.
And so I had to rehearse it a lot,
but you know, going out on stage,
it was so nostalgic and it was so much fun.
And then seeing the reaction that everyone had
was just so heartwarming.
And I knew it would have that impact on people,
which is exactly why I did it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And I don't know if you saw too,
but Joe just recently went on a Hot Ones episode.
Seemingly confirmed.
Oh, I saw.
They're doing Camp Rock 3.
What are your thoughts on that?
What was your reaction to that?
I was like, oh, was he allowed to say that?
I like how everyone was like, yeah, was that okay?
Yeah.
And then speaking of that,
we'd love seeing you back on stage.
Where do you stand on touring?
Is that something that you want to do?
Do you want to take the stage again?
What does that look like for you?
Yes, definitely.
It's definitely something I want to do
and you'll also have to wait and see.
Lots of surprises in store.
Yeah, lots to come.
Okay, so Demi, before you let you go,
we thought we could play one quick rapid fire game
with you down for that.
Okay.
Okay, here we go.
Demi, what is the best part of being married?
It's a giant sleepover for your whole life
with your best friend.
Oh, I love that, okay.
It's the best.
What's a lyric on the album
that sums up where you're at in life right now?
It's not that deep unless you want it to be.
Ooh.
And that's from Kiss, my song Kiss.
Who's a pop queen you'd love to collab with next?
Well, my biggest collaboration dream would be Lady Gaga.
I would love to collaborate with her,
but also I would love to collaborate with Kesha.
I would love to collaborate with Adela.
There's so many talented pop girlies out there.
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
What do you think is the biggest difference
between 2015 Demi and 2025 Demi?
2015 Demi, Demi was unsure of herself
and that Demi was,
it feels weird talking about myself in third person.
I'm gonna stop.
In 2015, I wasn't sure of myself.
I was young and still figuring myself out
and now I just feel sure of who I am
and that feels really, really good.
I love that, beautiful.
What is a song that you wish you wrote?
Sex on the Bee by Adela.
Oh, that's good, I love that.
What's your favorite TV show of all time?
The Walking Dead.
Really?
Yes, I'm obsessed with The Walking Dead.
I wasn't expecting to say that.
I've seen not the newest season of Daryl Dixon
but every episode of The Walking Dead,
sometimes multiple times.
Oh, why, you just love the show?
Why?
I don't know, it's just so good.
It's just the characters that you grow so close to them
and then nobody's safe on the show.
They will kill off anyone
and so you're left being so surprised.
It's just, it's unpredictable.
It's amazing.
I need to watch it from the top again then.
Oh, you have to.
Okay, done.
Last question is what is your favorite track
on It's Not That Deep?
My favorite track on It's Not That Deep?
I don't know.
I do love Kiss.
Yeah, I do love Kiss a lot.
Well, we are so excited for the entire album.
We cannot wait to hear the full thing
and thank you so much for being here.
Can we give it up one more time for Divya Lovato
and Richie Aguilera, we love you.
Congratulations, we're so excited for you.
Already a longtime fan,
make sure you ring the bell down below
so you don't miss a single video.
See you next time.
