what's wrong with you germans? why do you have this?
watch this video to finally and completely understand the dativ.
and i'm here to help you to improve your german. in this video we're gonna talk about german case
dativ is the third german case and probably also the third which you learn when you are a beginner
and i know i know already a lot of students a lot of my students when they already hear dativ
they're gonna be oh no this is a terrible thing. that's why i made this video to explain you in
we start first with the dativ articles. before we can make some examples you need to know the
articles in dativ. as you probably already know as you should know already if not it's gonna link
up a card here which explains you the articles in nominative and accusative. in accusative they only
change in masculine. good news right? but in dativ it's a little bit more complicated.
we go through it a little quick. we have masculine definite article is
and indefinite article there is no plural such as in nominative and accusative as well.
so you see in masculine and in neutrum they are the same. feminine is different and plural dativ
is definite article. when do you have to use dativ? we use dativ after specific prepositions.
this we're not going to do in this video because i'm going to make a separate video about
prepositions with dativ. this is pretty straightforward and you have the preposition
and then you have to memorize either you have to use dativ or accusative. but about this all
in another video. after specific verbs you have to use dativ after specific verbs. it's around 50
verbs which require dativ. with those verbs you only have to use dativ. if you want to have this
list i made a pdf file which you can download. i put the link down in the description so you
can download these pdf files with all the 50 or i think it's 53 verbs which require dativ for free.
so check out the description below and click the link where you can download this pdf file
for free. and we also use dativ in sentences with more than one object. meaning you have a
direct and indirect object. so again after verbs you either have verbs which only require dativ
and you have verbs where you have to use accusative and dativ. meaning two objects.
let's start with the verbs with dativ.
and is with dativ.
the man helps the woman.
is nominative, subject.
is dativ.
you help the child.
next one is gehören. gehören is also with dativ and gehören means to belong to somebody.
gehört mir. the pen belongs to me. again der stift ist subjekt, nominativ und mir ist
personalpronomen im dativ. der hund gehört der frau. der hund gehört der frau. wir sehen hier
and the dog belongs to the woman. der hund ist subjekt.
first of all i'm gonna give you a quick overview about the three options you have. you have
sentences with one thing or just one person and then you have to use nominative. you just
have a subject right. zum beispiel das auto ist kaputt. das auto ist subjekt, ist kaputt,
is broken so there's nothing else. it's just a subject so you have to use only nominativ.
if you have two things or a person or a thing meaning you have an object so you have to use
akkusativ, nominativ und akkusativ. zum beispiel du schreibst einen brief.
you write a letter. du is subjekt und einen brief is object. the direct object is in akkusativ.
and now we have also sentences with three things or three people. usually one thing and two people.
that's the most common situation. and then you have to use nominativ, akkusativ und dativ.
he gives a letter to the woman. and this is what we're gonna look into it right now.
first just this small overview. we have subject. subject is always nominative. then we have the
direct object meaning the object which has direct contact to the subject. and this one is in
akkusativ. and then we have the indirect object which is in dativ. and this one has no contact
to the subject. so always the direct object. this one has direct contact to the subject and is in
akkusativ. let's have a common normal situation.
the man gives a letter to the woman.
that is the subject. then we have
and it's a direct object. and there is direct contact between the subject and the object.
and this one is in akkusativ. and then we have another object which is the woman.
so it has to be in dativ. same situation.
let's do some examples.
is a waiter. and he brings the food to the guest in the restaurant.
the verb is bringen. bringen is a verb with dativ and akkusativ.
the waiter brings the food to the guest.
is nominative.
is the indirect object in dativ. and
the direct object is in akkusativ.
and as you can see here the word order it's always like this. it's always if you have two
objects. indirect object which is usually a person comes before the akkusativ object.
that's the word order. it will change. this word order can change if you use pronouns.
but this is a subject later on. not right now. so if you have proper nouns
then always dativ first and then the akkusativ object.
another example.
what is the man doing?
and schreiben is also with akkusativ and dativ.
he writes a letter to the mother.
again.
was macht der papa?
das verb ist erzählen. erzählen is to tell. to tell a story.
dem kind eine geschichte.
he tells a story to the child.
again.
er is subject. nominative.
dem kind is the indirect object dativ. and
eine geschichte is the direct object in akkusativ.
oder was mache ich?
ein lehrer erklärt.
erklären heißt to explain.
und erklären ist auch mit akkusativ und dativ.
that's what i'm doing right now.
i explain the dative to the students.
that's you guys.
so den studenten is plural.
that's why you have to use the article in dativ plural.
some adjectives require dativ as well.
so there are some adjectives with dativ.
a very common sentence is
both is okay.
in english i feel hot.
it's too hot.
has a completely different meaning.
actually means i am hot.
meaning i'm super beautiful or whatever.
it's not the same meaning all right.
so if it's about temperature.
if you feel hot then you always say
do you feel bored?
are you bored?
are you feeling cold?
do you feel cold?
again don't say
this would mean like you your characteristics.
you are a very cold person.
and you don't laugh.
and you're very serious.
so different meaning.
if it's about temperature.
if you feel cold then just say
hausaufgaben is homework.
now it's your turn.
i want you to write a sentence.
write a sentence using one of those four verbs.
down in the comments write a sentence using
to give
to bring
is to show
is to cook
all of those verbs you have to use
so use two objects and you have to use
let me know down in the comments.
write down your homework.
