Hey everyone and welcome to another video. Today I'm going to be finishing off the
unboxing of this book right here and then do a little flip through of it.
So this came from Amazon because obviously I
ordered it from Amazon and it arrived perfectly
as you can see and it comes with a little plastic wrap around it which I'm
going to get rid of carefully. I have to use my left hand
because my right hand is in a little bit of pain.
Careful, careful, careful. Okay, here we go.
Just remove the scissors. I don't want to accidentally cut this.
Plastic wrap gone. Excuse me a moment while I put my wrist
splint on. Okay, so this is a cover. Oh, it's really heavy.
Okay, oh okay. Alright, let's take this out. I thought it
had like a backing on one end but it isn't. It's
open, open, open. Look, this is what it looks like
and then here it bends down. Goodness, it's really, really heavy.
Hold on, let me just sort this out. I don't want to accidentally do anything to it.
Okay, put it on the stand and zoom out. Put these scissors away.
Massive, really massive. I'll put the exact size in the description
or I'll just give you a link to where I bought it.
Anyway, try and get that completely in frame.
Alright, we got this. Okay, I just want to see what the front cover looks like.
Hey, Leonardo da Vinci, the complete paintings and drawings.
Oops, put that cover back on. I won't do a flip through of every page
because I think there's like 700 pages or something like that.
Plus, I don't want to ruin it for anyone who wants to buy this.
It's huge. That's really, it's on very beautiful glossy paper, like, like satin.
It's not, it's not overly glossy so that you can't
see the images. It's perfect. Print quality is beautiful.
You know what, actually, let me zoom into this one and you can see the print
quality for yourself. How beautiful is that?
Oh, I like that. I like that there's all this
information here. Leonardo, like other artists at the start of their career,
trained his hand and eye by making studies of older works of art and in
chubby chubby baby. Wow, look at that.
It's kind of a shame. It's always a shame when you have a double page spread
because there's always this little centre that kind of
ruins it all, but this is amazing. Let's zoom in on this one as well, actually.
Amazing. This is well worth the price, by the way.
In a couple of reviews, I read people saying that the book is just
way too big and that some of the images
were a little low resolution, but to me, this size is perfect and it's the
reason why I bought it. I first saw this book in a bookshop in Westfield
and it was priced at £40 something, but I knew I could get it cheaper
online and I did. I got it a little over £10 off on Amazon
and I bought it specifically because of the size. I knew it was going to be
amazing. Is that the same baby from before?
It was in the beginning, right? By the way, I'm not familiar with all of
his work. The reason why I bought the book is
because recently I've been really obsessed with finding out about
our historical artists and what they specialised in
and the things that they went through and
the person I'm most obsessed with right now is Leonardo da Vinci because
he has, from what I can tell, an incredibly analytical mind and
I feel like that connects with me a lot because I tend to analyse
as well. I'm not just someone who just likes to draw, I like to analyse
everything that I'm doing. So Leonardo da Vinci is the one artist
that really resonates with me. So obviously his
his work has got to be the first book that I bought and I do
plan on buying a book on his life. There are so many books
out there talking about his life, so if you guys know
any really good books that's really comprehensive, includes a lot of
information, has a lot of pages, then let me know in the comments below
because that is the kind of book I am interested in.
I love the colours. The colours are amazing.
I've always... this is one of the reasons why I absolutely love
historical art, even though I wasn't really obsessed with it when I was
younger. It's because of the colours that they
use, very earthly tones. It's beautiful. Skip ahead. I really like these
double page spreads. They're printed so nice.
I'll just skip a few because otherwise it would take forever for me to go
through all of this. See, that's a little
disappointing, you know, the middle part where it cuts
off. But also at the same time I kind of like that they're printed at this size,
so you know, it's a compromise that you have to make
if you want something at this size. Is that the same baby from before?
Come on, that's the same baby from before.
I wonder what that... what is that? Forgive me, the people who know their animals
inside out. What is that, a weasel? I don't know what
that is.
Are these from his sketchbooks? These are from his sketchbooks, right? I'm obsessed
with his sketchbook drawings. They're absolutely beautiful and I think
just looking at them, his sketches online, not this book
because obviously I haven't seen this book yet,
but just looking at his sketches online is helping me loosen up my own
sketches because I'm a bit too much of a
perfectionist when it comes to my sketchbooks, which
I need to get over if I want to get more observations done.
I really like that sepia colour as well for sketching. I think I'm going to get
a set of pencils with that tone because the sketches just look beautiful
in that tone. I'll probably use them in my toned tan
sketchbook, which I haven't used yet, even though I bought it
months and months ago. That tone, I love that tone. This painting looks
seriously damaged. Skip ahead a little bit more. A lot of
text in these, I'm going to spend a lot of time reading through this, of course,
of course, of course. I wonder if there are close-ups
of this one. Yay! Look at that! You see the close-ups of
it? Let's zoom in on this one. I love it, you can see all the cracks in
the painting. Isn't that beautiful? I love it. I'm going to enjoy looking
through every single one of these. Let's put that back up. Zoom out.
I hope my sweat isn't going all over the pages.
I'm seriously sweating right now. Kind of excited, kind of.
I love horses, they're so beautiful.
Skip ahead. I like that they have the full image and then they have close-ups
of it. Hey! This is a weasel, I'm guessing.
I'm gonna have fun reading through every single one of these.
So much text. I like that they've printed it with
small bars because obviously that's easier to read and I like that it
doesn't fill up the entire page. Can you imagine having a book this big and
to have the text fill up the entire page? That would be
a little bit overwhelming and no matter how much I like to read
these kinds of things, even I would put off reading it.
I like that a lot. I like the quality of the print.
It really is amazing. Now I completely agree with all of them, not all of the
reviews because some of them were a little bit negative but all of the
most of the reviews talking about how incredible
the print quality is of this book and that it's worth it and someone commented
that if this book was priced at a hundred pounds
it would be worth the price and I do completely agree. I'm utterly shocked
that a book like this can be available for the price that it is and Taschen has
more than just a book on Leonardo da Vinci. They have
a book on Van Gogh and do they have a book on Michelangelo?
I think it's Michelangelo. I'm not entirely sure but I do want the
book on Van Gogh as well. Pretty, pretty, pretty. Skip ahead, skip
ahead, skip ahead. Oh, horses! I love horses. It's so pretty.
See, I'm most interested in looking at the sketchbook drawing but these I'm
going to spend a lot of time looking through them
because we're all pretty much aware of the main pieces of work
but these sketches are the ones that unless you buy the books
or you know you have access to the originals
you're not really going to see them and
and plus even if I do a google search of these
you can't trust everything that you see on the internet. Not that you can trust
everything you see in a book as well but I feel like this is more credible than
what we see than what we see on the internet and
what I mean by this is a lot of the times you might have people
putting up youtube videos or whatever showing works of artists and then they'll
add works from other artists and the viewer
being unfamiliar with the work wouldn't know that some of the work isn't from
that artist and I did come across a youtube video that did just that
so that's why I'm far more interested in looking at sketches
inside books which hopefully have been researched and
and put together well compared to isn't it weirdly convenient how I
paused here and my voice broke. I wasn't actually
looking at the drawing but my voice broke so don't
don't read anything into that but uh what was I saying
now I've forgotten my train of thought yeah I trust what's in the book far more
than what I see on the internet sketches sketches sketches let's skip
ahead a little bit more I've only got four minutes left on my
memory card so I'm gonna have to go through this quicker
it's incredible
these are the kind of sketches that I need to do I need to do more
anatomical sketches
really wanna know oh that's a baby in a womb
oh what the heck is that is that a sheep skip skip skip oh three
minutes okay go for it oh flowers flowers flowers
nice
skip skip skip mountains whoo this guy did it all
sorry I'm skipping through this really quickly I don't have much time on my
memory card left oh look at that
I love that he writes over his sketchbooks
see this there's there's so much in his work that
that makes me feel incredibly connected to him because I write all over my
sketchbooks as well and then I look at him and I'm like
I do something similar to Leonardo da Vinci not that I'm
as good as him or ever will be but hey there's one thing
that I have in common with the guy
like these like analyzes everything that's incredible
oh my god two minutes two minutes okay speed it up
these are these uh the latter half of the book seems to be sketches
only I wonder if we'll get anything else in the end
oh yeah that's it that's what I wanted because you know all of his writings are
um see this is where you know I don't know
much about the guy I don't know what language he speaks or spoke
so I don't know what this is written in but there's a book that translates
everything that he wrote I think I'm going to pick that book
because obviously I want to know what he wrote in his books one minute okay one
minute skip skip skip skip skip skip skip
oh my god
oh what is that oh is that the kind of sketchbook you use
oh we're at the end okay importance of drawings
school bibliography oh I'll be looking for this
I like this thing that that publishers have been doing where they put all of
their information at the back rather than at
the front I've noticed quite a few doing that oh zero minutes
zero minutes okay I'm gonna have to conclude this I hope you guys enjoyed
this this flip through uh thank you guys for
watching and I will see you next time bye
