Are you an executive looking to advance your career but there's a lot of uncertainty that you're feeling because of the shifts in the economy?
Well, at the time of recording of this video, there's a lot of talk about an upcoming recession and a crisis market.
If you're an executive, you feel that crisis, you feel the shifts in the strategic direction of the company that you're working in.
So if that's you and you still want to advance your career path, but there's a lot of budget cuts that you're noticing,
there's a lot of shifts in hiring, there's a lot of freezes in terms of promotion, but you still want that advancement.
Then in today's video, what I'm going to share with you are five key ways that you can recession-proof your career growth as an executive.
And it's going to follow the word thrive, T-H-R-I-V-E.
It starts with T-H and then the subsequent R-I-V-E.
So let's talk about the first way to recession-proof your career.
T-H stands for think in business functions.
Chances are if you are an executive, then you're answering to C-suite, right?
There's somebody in the C-suite of executive leadership team that you are reporting to.
And this is important to think in terms of business function because in a market,
the sole function and goals and aims of C-suite is to be able to diviniate what is the vision that we're heading towards?
What's our mission? Where are we heading as an organization?
What is then therefore the strategic direction that we need to make?
What are the key decisions we need to make in order to make those visions come to fruition?
In order to head that direction, what are we going to do right now?
And what are we going to commit to right now as a top priority to get us there?
So then as a result of that strategic direction,
there are certain functions within the business that you need to be aware of.
So as an executive, this is in terms of thinking from the C-suite perspective, where do they want to go?
What is the direction? Has it shifted prior to the changes in the economy?
Has it shifted or has it not shifted but certain priorities have shifted?
So it's really important to be involved in those decision making discussions,
to be involved in those meetings with respects to strategic direction.
And as you're being involved in it, to make those contributions, knowing what the business functions are.
So that is the first way to recession proof your career.
The second way to recession proof your executive career.
R stands for render and essential service.
Because let's face it, whenever there are huge shifts in the economy,
it's even more important that your organization, that their business functions are sustainable.
Sustainability of their business functions is going to be the primary and top priority focus of the most senior executive team, the C-suite.
So this is where it's important. Rendering essential services.
What do I mean by that?
You as an executive are a valuable asset to the senior most executive leadership team.
You're a very valuable asset because your insights are positioned towards helping them make those strategic direction calls, those decisions.
So this is where it's important. How can your experiences and your insights, the wisdom behind your knowledge,
not the data of your knowledge, not the technical knowledge that you have,
but the wisdom and insight behind your knowledge.
How can those pieces, the summation of all those pieces, how can you ensure that the business functions are sustainable?
What is the core problem that you're trying to solve?
And the problem that you're trying to solve today might be different before the shifts in the economy occurred.
Or it might have been decided that the problem, the issues that we are solving are going to be different intentionally because we need to get ahead of a potential recession.
So what is the real problem that you are solving? What is the real problem?
And as a result of solving that real problem or the new priority problem that we're choosing to solve,
what is the outcome that we're going to work towards?
So it's important how you know exactly and very precisely how the wisdom behind your knowledge solves the real problem.
But before you can know that, you must also know what is the real problem that we are trying to solve now.
Because if the moment you are unclear of this, your uncertainty or your lack of clarity around it,
that creates a true vulnerability for the leadership team.
So that is the second way you can recession proof your executive career is to render essential services.
So we have T-H-R-I.
So the third way to recession proof your executive career starts with the letter I.
And I stands for invest in yourself.
Because if you reflect on your career path, what it took,
the steps that you took to become an executive that you are today, right?
You had worked very hard to increase your education.
You worked very hard in essence to really develop your technical skills, the know-how, right?
And that got you where you're at today with respects to being really good at what you do,
being very skilled at what you do.
But in order to get to the next level of your executive career path,
the technical skills, that level of know-how is less and less important.
And what becomes of greater importance is your ability to articulate,
your ability to communicate,
your ability to create alignment across teams vertically and up below and horizontally,
your ability to build trust, to convey certainty.
Those skills become increasingly more important.
So at the center of all of those that I just listed out,
at the center of it is communication.
Communication is well known for being a soft skill,
but it's not so soft as you might think, right?
Having that level of vernacular of communication is difficult at best,
but it is especially difficult for those of you who have been so focused on the technical skills up until now.
So first is a mindset shift that is important for you to make,
that it's not about being good at what you do.
It's not about implementation.
This is the highest level of value now that you want to play at.
And the highest level of value is communication.
So if you're somebody who recognizes this,
maybe you're somebody who's been experiencing inside of your organization,
that the technical skills you once had are less and less important now.
And you're realizing it,
you have this level of awareness and you're serious about taking,
but you're still serious about taking your career to the next level.
If that's you, then I invite you to work with me.

So far we have T-H-R-I-V, right?
So V is the fourth way to recession proof your executive career.
And V stands for evaluate your decisions.
Valuate.
Valuate is the root word for valuation,
which essentially means putting a dollar figure to something.
So evaluate your decisions.
What do I mean by that?
Every decision that you're about to make or that you're about to propose or that you're about to contribute to from the senior executive team,
every decision has a valuation and it has,
which means that the decision,
the consequences of that decision after take acting upon,
it has real consequences that affect the financial status of the company or the financial strength of the company or simply the finances of the company.
Because when it comes to an economy where there are constant changes and shifts and there are talks about an upcoming recession,
then it is utmost important that cash flow,
that a company,
an organization maintains their cash flow.
It is of utmost importance because of business functions,
because of maintaining great hires,
because of maintaining leadership,
because of growth and so on.
But as you're evaluating your decisions,
it's important also to realize that it's not just about the bottom line.
It's not just about the profits that the company makes.
It's also top line and bottom line.
So how do all the decisions,
all the valuation,
how can you evaluate each decision so that you can see how it affects both the top line revenue and the bottom line in profits?
So that is way number four is to evaluate your decisions.
So now we are on the fifth and final way,
how you can recession proof your executive career.
So we have T-H-R-I-V-E and E stands for embrace simplicity.
Because when it comes to shifting markets,
shifting economies,
a lot of times we've been programmed to believe that we need a really complex solution because these are complicated times.
So we're programmed to believe that when times are really complicated,
when there's a lot of dynamicity in what we're observing,
when there's a lot of moving pieces,
then we need an equally complex solution.
We need an equally dynamic solution in order to move things forward.
Look at it this way.
The more complex a solution is,
the more resources that are required to build infrastructure around it.
And infrastructure could be hiring new people.
It could be having new technology or software.
It could be changing processes.
And so therefore there are personnel resources.
There's a lot of new infrastructure that needs to be built.
But in a shifting economy,
and certainly when there is a lot,
a great deal of uncertainty,
what is most important is the need to adapt.
Adaptability is one of the greatest needs in a market like this.
So as a result of that great need for adaptability,
sometimes, most of the time actually,
needing to build infrastructure because of complexity,
complex solutions really makes it difficult to adapt.
So that's why the fifth way to recession-proof your career is to embrace simplicity.
Embrace it.
