Hello welcome to my YouTube channel Club Français
My name is Marion I am a French and foreign language teacher
And I teach you French through movies and series
Welcome to this new video I hope you are doing well
Today we are going to talk about shadowing
So if you follow me a bit on social media you
know that this is a method I particularly enjoy
But the question everyone is asking what is shadowing
Shadowing is a technique that was popularized especially by Alexander Argel
You can check out his YouTube channel he's a polyglot who talks a lot about languages
It is a method that involves repeating phrases spoken by native speakers
At the same time above them in order to improve
his pronunciation the rhythm etc of the language
So this is really a technique that will allow you to work on your speaking skills
I don't know if you've ever done this but for example when you were younger
you may have been singing songs in foreign languages you didn't master
You may not necessarily know the meaning of the words
but still you were singing over the voices of the singers
I do it in rhythm and by trying to repeat the sound
Well shadowing is exactly that but with spoken language
and by trying to understand as much as possible of the language
since indeed it is your target language
In any case if you want to improve your pronunciation and look more natural in Frenc
And also develop your linguistic intuition that's really the method you should practice
Today I'm taking you with me on a guided session with the Plein Coeur series
We're going to do some shadowing together
But before starting there are three rules you need to know
in order to reuse clips from movies or series yourself later
Choose an audio that you like for practicing shadowing
Choose a video where you can clearly see the actors' lips moving
It will help you imitate their pronunciation as closely as possible
Choose a video that contains phrases that will be useful in your daily life
Things you can reuse by changing a few small words for example
And rule number three don't forget to imitate the actors' gestures
Gestures with the body and also with the head
Body language the language of the body is very important
Of course you can practice shadowing without understanding what you'repeating there's no problem with that
It's better to understand it will allow you to develop several language skills at the same time
We will now focus on a heartwarming video that I have already used in another video
So if you want to know the explanations of the text we will be using today
Don't hesitate to click up here or there to see the explanation for this video
Let's go I'm taking you with me for a shadowing session
So there are all these animals just watching without doing anything
So the complete sentence spoken here is
So there are all the animals watching like that without doing anything
I am writing this sentence here
That is the sentence written in correct French
Now you to do shadowing you can rewrite the sentence in this way for example
In a more phonetic way that will help you repeat it more naturally
and spontaneously without needing to think about the reading
When you do shadowing you really have to give up reading and let yourself be carried away by the sound
So feel free to rewrite your sentence this way or that way
The second thing you can do in your rewriting
so you can take a piece of paper and write down what you hear by closing your eyes
By trying to be as close as possible to the sound so it's easier for you to pronounce
And don't forget to also add small marks for intonation
For example we can make pauses here like here
Or maybe why not mark the moments when the tone goes up or down with arrows for example
That's up to you
Try to note down what will help you
The idea is to detach from reading and try to repeat over the voices of the characters
For the next part of the exercise I will add the subtitles below the videos in correct French
You can rewrite them in your own way
I won't give you a way to rewrite them so you don't get stuck on the writing
But if you need to see it written
Don't hesitate to write it down on a piece of paper with your own phonetic way of writing
The video will repeat
I cut it into several parts so you can practice short phrases
Each sentence will be repeated twice allowing you to try it several times
Don't hesitate to go back and take breaks
It's your video
You can also try slowing the video down just a little
The goal of the game is to stay as natural as possible when repeating all of this
Last note don't forget that shadowing is also about repeating the gestures and body language
And of course to speak above the person who is speaking
at the same time like if you were singing a song
The real point of the exercise is this
You can record yourself and listen back to compare with the original
Try to correct the things you hear
There's no need to do this exercise 25 times okay
The idea isn't to be tired of hearing this excerpt
Do it 3-4 times and once you're fed up you stop
You can come back in 2 days in 4 days
And then of course change the excerpt as often as possible so you don't get bored
So there are all these animals just watching without doing anything
But there there is a little hummingbird that is active on its own to go get water and buy it on the fire
And at that moment there's a tattoo artist who arrives and says
A tattoo isn't a type of weird armadillo is it
In any case a hummingbird is not a seagull
So now you're an influencer and a platypus
Ornithologist Charlotte
Platypus it's the squirrel with a duck's bill
Ornithologist Charlotte
Platypus it's the squirrel with a duck's bill
Short answer the tattoo says to the hummingbird that basically what he's doing is pointless
But there what does the hummingbird reply
I know but I'm doing my part
Short answer the tattoo says to the hummingbird that in short what he's doing is pointless
But here what does the hummingbird reply
I know but I'm doing my part
There it's done I hope you enjoyed the exercise
Don't hesitate as I told you to do it again in 2-3 days or within a week
If this is a type of exercise you enjoy let me know in the comments
Tell me what was the most difficult for you what was the most challenging in this exercise
Don't hesitate to tell me if you want us to do it again that would be a pleasure
If you want to add shadowing to your learning I'll leave you the link below this video to download my workbook
It's a workbook that will help you add movies and series to your learning using a step-by-step method
So that it is really effective and that you really learn something
