‘That’s what football and this League does to ya hahahahahaha no but seriously I smelled it at half time.’
You lose a game. What happened in that second half?
Well, I think probably in reflection, you say we lose a game.
I think that's the thing. With this team, there's been
extraordinary for 12 games to do what we do in a championship.
Not many can do it.
And then today we were ordinary in our performance.
The levels dropped a bit.
We've had a challenging week because we've lost three out of the back four.
Part of our strength is trying to remain consistent, particularly the back end of the pitch.
But that's not pointing at the players that came on in those areas necessarily.
That's looking at us as a whole and saying we were not quite at it today.
And that's what football and this league does to you.
Do you think that did have an impact then?
The fact that you had to make three changes in defence tonight?
Everyone else can talk about that.
Listen, it's not that.
Defender players, you're coming into games.
It's a difficult game.
So I think I just said that.
I'm not pinpointing on that.
But changes when you've had consistency is a normal thing.
Everyone knows that.
But it's a team thing and it's a difficult match.
I knew that before.
I knew that before with the way that they play and the atmosphere and the environment here.
And again, I smelt it at half-time.
It wasn't just that we were 1-0 up.
I could smell it myself.
And we just dropped a bit.
Maybe that happens when you're 12 unbeaten and you win six on the bounce.
We can't ever believe our own hype.
I'm the one that's diffusing it all the time.
Everyone's getting excited.
This league's long.
And don't worry, we're good.
We're good.
But this is what happens to normal teams.
And we haven't been that.
So we'd better show again in the next games what we really are again.
And it wasn't a lack of effort.
It wasn't a terrible performance.
It just wasn't what we've been.
And this can happen in football.
What could the players have done better to contain Wrexham second half?
Because you said that you felt it coming.
Small things in a game.
They're small things because if you look at how Tatsu played on the right wing,
Sakamoto was incredible.
If everybody's at that edge, then I think it feels different.
I'm talking about balls that bounce away from people, little balls that drop down,
that normally we're securing and holding and winning the competitive moments.
If you don't do those against a team that are built on the competitive moments,
then the game can drift away from you.
So, yeah.
It's got to go again, haven't you?
Sheffield United on Tuesday?
Yeah, yeah.
Everything's tough, right?
We've got Sheffield United, we've got Stoke.
And every game's tough.
But we have to... It's a good test.
Listen, I'm lucky enough to have won things as a player and had success at different times.
I've sat in a dressing room like the lads feel.
During unbelievable seasons, it's impossible, this game, to sit there and win and win and win.
Everyone talk about you and all those things.
I know now what the reaction needs to be.
It's every individual in the room, the ones that started, the ones that came in,
the ones that aren't coming in.
Everyone has to train, train, train and push and understand what football is.
And this group are good.
I'm not flipping on this group.
I'm absolutely with them.
I'm not sitting there throwing everything around in there because this can happen in football.
But we have to understand it.
And if individuals are a bit below par, don't be below par in the next one.
Thank you, Frank.
Thank you.
