When you know, it's a rare thing.
When I met my wife, I knew.
When, you know, in kids, I knew.
And when I was talking to Jerry that day,
I was like, oh yeah.
Action!
And, quiet on the set.
So, the decision to end your time with the character,
what did that come out of?
Was it where you were in your career?
I mean, there's a physical aspect, obviously.
Every time I did it,
I wanted to feel excitement about it,
and real inspiration, oh, we're tackling something new.
So, I was not sure what that new thing was gonna be.
I didn't know if we could find something new.
I'd been in eight movies up to this point,
even though some of them were cameos,
but I was just struggling to work out
what that was gonna be.
And I was at a dinner party with Jerry Seinfeld.
He has a really clear and very decisive
kind of philosophy about creativity,
and when's the time to call it quits on something,
when you should leave the party,
and when it's time to go to a new party.
And he, I'll never forget him saying that,
he said, you need to leave something in the tank
that actually, if there is, you'll feel,
it's like, okay, I think we might have said everything,
but there's still a little bit left,
then that's the time to go.
And the moment he was talking, I was like, I knew.
And it really, weirdly, the moment I had that thought,
the ideas for this last film really flooded in.
And the inspiration and the excitement about it.
I have never felt there was more at stake.
I've never felt a movie to be more personal.
I've never been more involved in the creation
or execution, even promotion of a movie.
I am really invested in it.
And I think that's because it was the right decision.
You know?
It didn't feel like, ah, last one,
let's just wave around and do the victory lap, let's go.
I was really determined that my kids and their kids
had a film that could be definitive for the character.
That if, you know, 20 years from now,
my grandkids go, ah, grandpa, you know,
those cute little movies you used to make
when they used to watch movies on a screen
on the end of a wall, you know, you did nine,
which one should I see?
I wanted to get that one, watch that one.
But wait till you're 18.
