There were some awesome bikes at the 2022 Vets MXDN, but this could well be the prettiest! Chuck Davies is a well renown bike restorer in the UK and this is the bike he built for himself to race the event with the help of the Mitch Payton and the guys at Pro Circuit. Get the low down on the bike and watch to see how Chuck gets on at the Vets MXDN!
This might just be the most beautiful KX125 I've ever seen.
And this isn't any ordinary replica.
This is the real deal.
In this video, we are going to meet the owner
and builder of this beauty.
He's going to tell us what makes this bike special,
and then we are going to watch and listen
to this thing in action at the 2022 VMX DN.
So we're here at Fox Hills and I'm with Chuck Davis,
one of the UK's most prolific bike builders,
bike restorers, and we're here
with one of your creations, Chuck.
Just tell us a little bit
about this absolutely stunning KX125 we're looking at here.
So yeah, it's a 1996 Kawasaki 125,
a replica as close as I can get it
to what the boys used back in the day.
It's been a few years since we've raced at Farley.
I got aged out of it with the age rules,
so I won the Super Evo the last time we raced there,
and it's been three years since I've not been able to race.
So yeah, finally old enough and back in,
so we've had a bit of time to build something,
but always loved this bike.
It's, they ran the chrome front end in Supercross,
but outdoors they ran this full green bike.
I think it was just one that obviously stands out,
especially in this sort of weather.
So yeah, I've always loved the look of it,
and with a bit of time to prepare,
I think we tried to come up with something cool,
and yeah, and a bit of time to get a few things else,
like the helmet and the kit as well, so.
You're going to look absolutely trick out there,
the helmet, the kit back here
that Chad from Riders done for you.
Just tell us a bit about the bike then,
and some of the special parts.
It's not just cosmetic, is it?
It's the real deal, really?
It is really, yeah.
The suspension is factory KYB kit.
The matching clamps that were Emig racing,
actually made by Gary Emig, Jeff's dad.
He made the clamps for the team back in the day,
so got a set of them off him, and yeah, all the bits.
But yeah, so the suspension's factory stuff.
The motor is actually an ex-Pro Circuit team motor
from back in the day.
I've had a load of bits from Mitch over the years,
and although you can still get a lot of the stuff nowadays,
they sell a lot of the stuff still,
but I know there's certain things they do differently
with their team motors,
so I've got a couple of contacts there,
and yeah, I got lucky.
At one point, I had my contact there.
I said, one day, I really want one of those.
I know the stores upstairs, they've got a Pro Circuit.
I said, I want one of those actual team motors,
and I got a call at midnight, about four months later,
from one of the guys that works there,
and he said, right, I'm with Mitch now.
Run us through what you want.
What year, what spec thing you want,
and they were just tearing through boxes
and pulling out all the bits to build this thing,
so we've got everything, all the motor and carbon pipe
that they used in one of their team bikes back in the day,
and shipped it over and said,
yeah, you need to run it on C12,
because it's high comp, and that's it,
but it does, it's really good.
We've done a couple of races on it this year at UK Evo,
and it's quick for a 125.
Yeah, it does go well.
That's pretty cool, isn't it,
to actually have one of those motors in there,
the factory suspension, the trick stuff you've got.
You're racing, obviously,
the Super Evo 125 class this weekend.
I keep saying this to people,
but if the bike sounds as good as it looks,
we're in for a treat,
but what are you aiming for results-wise
this weekend on this bike?
How do you think it will suit Fox Hills this weekend?
I think the bike suits Fox Hills down to ground.
I think it'll be, there's no excuses with machinery,
not there ever is with this,
but always try and go and win,
whether it happens or not, it's another matter,
but yeah, if we can get a couple of good starts,
and like to try and be up the sharp end
and give it its best shot,
but yeah, I'd like to,
it'd be nice to get it on the podium, wouldn't it?
I think you'll have a bit of extra motivation
when you've got people like Mike Brown,
who actually rode one of these things back in the day,
watching you, that's gonna be cool, isn't it?
Yeah, definitely, yeah,
and it's cool to have all these boys back over again,
and Mike loves these old things, too,
and obviously he's back again,
but yeah, Villopuerto, cool to have him over this year,
and Dad and I had a chat with him yesterday,
and he was just real,
the stories we'd heard about how chilled out he is
and stuff now is absolutely true.
We just had a, just caught him for a five-minute chat,
and we ended up talking to him for 20, 25 minutes,
and he was not rushing anywhere,
and great to hear his stories and stuff
about his racing days, too, so,
yeah, it's cool to have him here and watching and stuff,
so, yeah, good.
Well, we can't wait to see you rip, Chuck.
Thanks, mate.
I think you guys will agree
that this is a very special-looking KX125,
but I reckon it's about time that we heard her sing.
Oh, oh.
After two days of racing,
Chuck just missed out on the podium by two points.
He walked away with fourth overall in the event,
but let's face it,
he definitely won all of the style points.
A big thanks goes to Chuck for chassing
and showing us his bike.
