David Harbour is back Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian in “Thunderbolts*”! He talked to “Extra’s” Terri Seymour at the L.A. premiere of the movie, which assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes. He raved about being back with Florence Pugh and their chemistry, sharing that he feels “a fullness of emotion” while working together. But while working with Florence was easy, the Russian accent wasn’t! David also teased the upcoming final season of “Stranger Things” and the final episode that had everyone weeping. “Thunderbolts*” is out May 2.
Back with his character, back with the costume.
Back with the character, back with the costume.
How does it feel?
I mean, I did it about a year ago, so right now it just feels like a different costume and a different character,
which is like David Harbour on a red carpet, which is his own character.
But, I mean, to do the movie was phenomenal.
To have people finally see it is a real gift because, you know, you work so hard on these things.
They're shrouded in secrecy.
Nobody really knows what's going on.
And so, finally, when you'll get to interact with it, it's so beautiful because your work finally speaks.
Back with Florence.
How was it to be with Florence and doing the accent?
Wow.
Those are two different questions.
Being with Florence, amazing.
The accent, very difficult.
But, yeah, being with Florence, amazing.
She's an incredible actress, obviously.
She's a wonderful human being.
But I just have a chemistry with her that I don't have with a lot of people.
When I work with her and when we play these characters, like right before we roll,
my heart seems to grow about like, you know, three inches.
And I feel a fullness of emotion.
And it's just sheer chemistry.
And I love it.
Well, what is it about Florence you think that makes you feel that?
I don't know.
And I got to tell you, like, it's something where, you know, we're all so interested nowadays,
it feels to me that, like, whether or not they got along backstage or off camera,
are they friends?
Are they really friends?
It's like the people that I'm really, really, really friends with,
I don't know that I'd be that good on camera.
The center of Florence where we respect the boundaries of the process
and we allow ourselves to just fully go there for the camera and for the audience.
And I think she's, you know, she's generous as an actress.
She wants to do things for an audience.
She doesn't want to be famous or important.
She wants to move people.
And I think that you feel that when you work with her and you're like,
well, I want to swim in that river.
I mean, I want to help you do that.
I want to be a part of that.
That's really interesting to hear.
And now I've got to ask you about the accent,
the speech to the accent and how difficult.
No, you didn't.
You didn't.
How hard is it doing?
Oh, God.
I think it's a super hard accent.
Not only that, but I think that Russians in general,
their demeanor is kind of, there's a sort of,
I don't know what's the word I'm looking for,
but a kind of steadiness and a darkness.
And the way I've crafted Red Guardian, he's very chaotic and very big.
And sometimes those two choices don't go well together.
They're not the chocolate and peanut butter of this performance.
But, you know, I'm pretty.
So pretty.
So pretty David.
Stranger Things.
The show.
What do you think about this?
I mean, again, it's another one I'm very excited for you to see.
It's coming later.
We've shot it.
We shot it for a year last year.
Shot it in tandem of shooting this Marvel movie.
Those guys, those Duffer brothers are, you know,
they know how to knock it out of the park
and they really know how to land the plane.
The final episode is quite, quite moving.
We did a read-through of just us, the kids,
and they were all weeping like I've never seen human beings weep.
So I can't wait.
Again, I can't wait.
Yeah, it's going to be a day for you.
A day and a half of binge-worthy weeping.
I can't wait.
