Hi Brainsnacks kids, Teacher Rob here. Today we're going on a trip around the world
to learn how different countries celebrate Christmas. Are you ready to travel with me?
Let's go! There's a link in the description to download free flashcards and a map to go with
Each red dot shows a country. We'll visit the country, learn a Christmas tradition,
and you can place the flag on your map at home or in class.
And remember, some Christmas traditions are found in many countries, not just one.
I picked one special tradition from each place to make it easy to learn and compare.
People all around the world celebrate in lots of wonderful ways.
Our first stop is Canada! Getting a real Christmas tree. In Canada,
many families go outside to cut down a real Christmas tree.
They bring it home, decorate it with lights, and put presents under it.
Place your Canada flag on the red dot. Next, let's go to the United States.
Hanging Christmas stockings. In the United States, children hang stockings by the fireplace.
On Christmas Eve, they believe Santa comes and fills the stockings with small gifts and candy.
Put the USA flag on the map now. Next, let's go to the United Kingdom.
Pulling a Christmas cracker. In the United Kingdom, families pull Christmas crackers at
dinner. The cracker goes pop! And inside, there is a paper hat, a small toy, and a little joke.
Place your United Kingdom flag on the map now. Next, let's go to Germany.
Visiting a Christmas market. In Germany, people visit Christmas markets. They drink warm drinks,
eat treats, and buy special decorations and gifts. Add the Germany flag to your map now.
Next, let's go to Mexico. Walking in Las Posadas. Breaking a piñata. Children in Mexico
walk from house to house, singing songs, and sometimes break a bright star-shaped piñata.
Candy and treats fall out, and everyone shares. Place your Mexico flag on the map now. Next,
let's go to the Philippines. Hanging parole lanterns. In the Philippines, people hang
beautiful star-shaped lanterns called paroles. The lanterns light up the night and welcome
Christmas. Put the Philippines flag on the map now. Next, let's go to Sweden.
Celebrating St. Lucia Day. In Sweden, children celebrate St. Lucia Day. One child wears a crown
with candles and brings sweet buns to the family while everyone sings songs. Add the Sweden flag
to your map now. Next, let's go to Australia. Christmas at the beach. In Australia, Christmas
comes in summer. Many families go to the beach, have a picnic or barbecue, and sometimes make a
snowman or a sandman out of sand. Place the Australia flag on the map now. Next, let's go to
Japan. Eating Christmas cake. In Japan, many families eat fried chicken and share a special
Christmas cake with strawberries and cream. Cities have beautiful Christmas lights too.
Put the Japan flag on your map now. And last, let's go to Taiwan. Visiting displays at department
stores. In Taiwan, Christmas is not a big public holiday, but many department stores have beautiful
lights and Christmas trees. Schools and shops sometimes have small Christmas parties and gift
exchanges. Place the Taiwan flag on the map now. Look at our map! We've visited 10 different
countries and each one celebrates Christmas in a different, wonderful way. Which country was
your favourite? Go to my Facebook page and leave me a message there to let me know which one you
Thanks for traveling with me, Brainstacks Kids. See you next time. Merry Christmas!
