Caspar David Friedrich： Monk by the Sea, Part 1

One of the most famous paintings of nineteenth century, Caspar David Friedrich’s Monk by the Sea does not depict any discernable narrative. A figure, who is identified by his robe as a monk, stands alone on a narrow beach. He looks out and beyond the horizon. This horizon becomes for the viewer, a conceptual and spiritual boundary. Beyond it, lies what cannot been observed with the eye, what can only be seen with the soul.
