How to Make an ACCURATE Sight Tape in Minutes

Welcome to the Elk Shape YouTube channel.
Today, I'm going to show you with no nonsense
how to make a sight tape right before elk season.
This video will involve former,
were you an employee or a contractor?
I think you were a contractor.
This is my good friend, Jacob the Web.
What's up guys?
Give everybody a quick update.
This is a quick video, no nonsense,
but you gotta come in here and look at this camera.
You are still welding full-time
for yourself and a company.
Yep.
Welding full-time, working 50 plus hours a week,
still doing my own thing, still working for a company.
We got big goals and we're trying to get there fast.
So working, trying to buy property,
building a house, raising kids.
Adulting.
So Jacob is elk hunting with a bow this year.
Honestly, last year, you didn't go.
It makes me sad.
You missed an elk season.
I worked.
Dang.
Jake is one of my favorite people to elk hunt with
because he never complains,
always has a smile and is down for my crazy ideas.
I always will advertise that
because you're one of the few.
Let's build you a sight tape today.
You're going elk hunting in two weeks.
Okay.
First things first, let's weigh his arrow.
And guys, this is gonna be just me and him
and vlogging style.
So if you wanted something cinematic,
there's other channels for that.
Here we go.
Last chance grain scale.
So this is a Victory HLR.
This is a 300 spine.
Simple max helical to the left.
And then standard outsert.
And I got a hundred grains out front.
Okay. Ranch fairy.
That's not very heavy.
It's just so light.
I've never killed an elk with something under 400.
You've been, you've been influenced by MFJJ.
He's hunting antelope this weekend with a bow that is,
or with an arrow that's 340.
And he's got a 30 inch draw.
I don't understand that.
That's good.
So peep to pin.
So center of the pin to the center of the shaft.
We'll write this number down.
Four and a half.
So he's going from his peep all the way down to his pen.
That's 28 and five eighths.
We are going to use this guy.
I don't really use the Labradar anymore
because I lost the little attachment,
the little microphone one.
And when we moved and I can't find it.
It's in a box somewhere.
So we're going to go Garmin.
We're going to go new session.
Bow.
Yes.
We can change it from 457,
which is what I hunt elk with.
To Jake's super weight.
What is it?
398.
So 398.
And we can go decimal too.
Can't we?
Why not?
So 398.6.
And then we hit okay.
And then you got to shoot five to 15 inches above this.
So we're going to have Jake shoot an arrow
where the arrow is going over this at 20 yards.
So we're going to go basically 10 yards from a target.
He's going to back up to 30.
He's going to shoot over this into the bell
and we'll get a speed at 20.
And then we'll do the same thing at,
if it's not windy, 80 or 90 or a hundred.
And then the further we can get those numbers,
the more accurate sight tape.
And then we'll print out a sight tape.
And then I'll show you how to do that and precision cut.
And the last thing he'll do is he's going to go find
like 60 or 70, like perfect.
And once he finds that,
that's when we'll put his tape on and it'd be good to go.
And you're running an HHA, a Tetra.
So it's a wheel.
You have to put that in there.
They calculate for it.
This is the easiest thing to do.
You see, I got a plate that kind of blocks Jake
from hitting my Garmin.
So I'm going to walk.
Well, you guys probably can't see,
but we have an elk target against the gym there.
I'm going to go 10 yards from there.
I'm going to use his range finder.
I'll set this in front 10 yards.
He's going to stand right where this camera is, which is 30.
He's going to shoot from 30 to the bell,
but we'll get his 20 yard speed.
You dialed to 30?
Yep.
Just got to check real quick.
Sweet. All right.
We'll bring you guys with us.
All right.
So I'll flip you guys around.
Jacob.
Okay. So Jacob still knows how to shoot.
All right, Jake, you're going to read your...
We should probably just pop this off.
It read every shot.
You're almost 300 feet a second at 20 yards, you bastard.
So 296,
296,
298,
297,
298.
So we want an average of those.
I saw 298s and 97 and 96.
So I say we go 298 for your average.
That's not a mean, but it's good enough for what we're doing.
Yeah.
All right.
So we'll go back out and we'll keep shooting.
All right.
So he shot...
Well, how far were you?
80?
So 70 yards is what we're getting a reading at.
It's 275, 275.3, 275.
So 275.
So I just said, Jake the Web, phase four,
HHA TetraMax, peep height, four and a half.
That's, you know, peep.
And then your peep to pen or sight radius is 28.625.
Create bow.
So there you are.
Now what you do is just add an arrow.
So your arrow is a HLR
and your total arrow weight was 398.6.
And then we want to sight in.
So hit sight in now.
You're going to be hunting probably around 3,300 feet
in North Idaho.
And we're going to do the downrange speed method.
First range was 20 yards is what the reading was at.
And then, so it was 80 from you to the target.
So 70 would be the, your speed was 298.
That is ridiculous.
298.
And then your second speed was 275, 275, 275.3.
Those are really good readings.
And you pretty much had to aim almost at this thing,
which is why I got the shield.
So turn that off.
So we're going to hit create sight in.
You're done.
So they calculate that your launch speed's 308.
So there's your sight tape for your wheel.
We can go beyond a hundred if you'd like.
Go to like a 130.
Do you want to take out the third digit?
So remove the third digit.
So it looks like that.
Do you like the spacing on all that?
What options do you have?
Right here, you can change the line weights.
Okay, so make them the, how about these ones?
So we're going to go download PDF
and then that's what it'll look like.
And then we're going to print on special paper
that you can pick up at Precision Cut Archery
has a link to it.
I can't remember the name of the website.
I literally bought,
I have a special printer just for sight tapes.
So we were just shooting at 80.
I marked from last weekend,
these two Sharpie dots on 35 is my 60
where I'm zeroed.
And that's definitely 60.
So lock that in place
and then he can take his wheel off.
And then loosen this screw
and then this will come right off.
Yeah.
Sick.
Jake got married last year, by the way.
Love life.
My dad married them.
True fact.
Tim was supposed to photograph the wedding.
I think he was in Wyoming.
He called me the day of,
hey bro, I'm not going to make it.
I thought it was the next weekend.
Tim is a really good photographer.
That would have been,
yeah, Tim's good.
Boy, he's cutting that.
Jake and I were both supposed to do a reunion shoot
at TAC Utah this year,
but my wife was ready to divorce me
if I went on one more trip.
Not really, but she just didn't want me to go.
So I stayed back
because I wanted to respect her.
And then you had something else going on in Seattle.
So we missed out.
So maybe next year,
Tim, if you're watching,
we'll do it next year, dude.
We should all go on a bear hunt.
Like let's actually go kill some stuff.
I'm going bear hunting.
Everyone's invited.
Damn, son.
Think it's going to work?
You're going to be shooting.
You can dial.
And you're going to be absolutely shocked
at how accurate this side tape is.
I promise we will do more stuff with Jake.
He's been working his butt off for the last two years,
trying to make big moves.
So it's not because we're not friends.
It's because he's honestly trying to make things happen.
This is how to make the most accurate side tape that I know.
He's going to be using the hide screw-ins.
We could have made it with those if we wanted.
I think it'd be just about the same.
Double check it.
If not, we'll come back.
We'll do it all over again.
Comment below.
If you're new to the channel,
you don't know who Jake is,
go back, look at some old videos.
He's the guy who used to film me.
And he's one of my favorite people to elk hunt with.
And we will elk hunt again,
maybe next year or the year after.
Just waiting for Jake to get some things figured out.
So separation is preparation.
Catch you on the next one.
Peace.
