The Blowhole itself is the signature attraction. The opening in the rock face is about 2.5 metres wide, and under favourable sea conditions (especially a SE swell), the blowhole can send plumes of seawater more than 30 metres high.
The geological origins go back around 260 million years ago, when volcanic lava flows formed the rock that now shapes the coastline at Kiama. Over time, erosion sculpted the collapses, tunnels and passages — giving rise to the blowhole phenomenon.
Timing matters: the blowhole is best experienced when the ocean swell and wind combine (commonly a SE swell). On calm days, it may be subtle or just a “whoosh.”
It’s been a magnet for visitors for more than a century — first recorded by explorer George Bass in 1797 when he anchored in what is now Kiama Harbour.
