Hey, I am Jared, and welcome to Fun Science Demos. What are we going to be talking about today?
The big idea today is light. Through science we have discovered four things
about light.
First thing, let me show you. What am I showing you?
I am showing you that light can travel in a straight line. We have shadows
because light travels in a straight line. I have a light here beaming down on me
and this
spoon. When I hold the spoon up to this little screen that I
just set up, the light beams travel. They are hitting the whiteboard,
and then the other light beams travel. They hit the spoon, and they are blocked out by
the spoon.
Light travels in a straight line. Shadows.
Next time you are outside in the sunshine, check out your shadow. And remember,
light travels in a straight line. Scissor,
fork, knife.
The shadow matches the object perfectly because light travels in a straight line.
Another thing science discovered about light?
It bounces off of certain materials.
Hence, my reflection. That is actually what we call it.
Light reflects off of certain materials. I have a mirror,
and light is traveling from this light to the mirror, and it is bouncing off,
and I can see my reflection.
So how many pennies are in our bowl? You see two, but
there is actually only one. What is going on?
Well, through science, we have discovered that light bends when it goes through
certain matter.
The thicker the material, the slower it goes, and it actually
bends. I have all this light coming into this bowl,
and the penny in the bottom. And it is as the light goes through the water, the water is
thicker than air, and it actually slows light down and bends it. It is almost like
diving into a swimming pool. I jump on the diving board. I jump up. I am going
quickly through the air, and as I hit the water,
I slow down and actually bend a little bit. Light does the same thing.
Picture all these light little divers jumping off into the water. They hit the
water. It slows down, and it bends.
We call it refract. One penny.
Light bends when it goes through certain matter. The last thing science has
discovered about light is that
it can be absorbed. In another video, we talked about the idea that light is
actually made up of all different colors.
And as light comes down, and it hits a white piece of paper, the white actually
reflects
all those colors. Black, black actually absorbs all of those colors. That is why
when you think about it, well,
when those colors are absorbed, it gets hotter. And when you think about it,
we wear light clothes in the summer because that white reflects
all that light. Do not wear black clothes in the summer because the black absorbs
all those colors, and it absorbs that light, and it gets hotter.
Science is so cool. Thanks for watching.
