German composer and organist. No information is known regarding his birth and death dates. He was based in the city of Rendsburg, where he held the position of organist at both the Christkirche and the Marienkirche. Apparently he enjoyed considerable fame during his lifetime, evidenced by the inclusion of this 'Sonata per il cembalo solo' as the leading work in the 1759 collection 'Oeuvres melées contenant: Sonates pour le clavessin de tant de plus celebres compositeurs' a significant publication that featured his work immediately before a piece by the highly influential Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Beyond his acclaimed sonatas, Appel’s known repertoire also included symphonies and a keyboard suite.
